International Information Systems Education Conference (ISECON) 2005 Press Release from Department:

Professor Patricia A. Joseph, Computer Science, presented two peer-reviewed papers and served as invited session chair at ISECON 2005, the 22nd Annual International Information Systems Education Conference, held on October 6-9, 2005 in Columbus, OH.

Joseph presented her paper, "Ethics in the Pedagogy of Information Systems," and "Information Warfare," which was originally written by Brandon Himes, a student in her Challenges of Computer Technology course in Spring 2005.  Both papers will be published in the ISECON 2005 Proceedings, which will be available as a CD and on-line by year's end.

On behalf of Brandon Himes and herself, Prof. Joseph accepted a "Meritorious Writing Award" presented by the Foundation for Information Technology Education and the Education Special Interest Group of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.  Himes' writing earned him the "Best Undergraduate Student Writing" designation.  Himes, a Senior majoring in Information Technology at SRU, is a resident of Duncannon, PA and a 2002 graduate of Central Dauphin High School.  Himes is Web Editor of The Rocket, the SRU student newspaper, and manages to fit three other part-time jobs into his busy schedule:  residential network assistant, computer lab assistant, and personal technology assistant for the TLTR.  He is also vice president of Blue Key Honor Society, a community service-based honorary.

Accompanying Joseph to the conference was another student, Andrew D. Shanbarger, who presented the paper "Computer Usage in the Classroom," which he originally wrote for Challenges of Computer Technology, a course that Patricia Joseph taught in the Spring 2005 semester.   This paper will be published in the ISECON 2005 Proceedings.  Shanbarger also served as a student volunteer at the ISECON conference.  He is a senior studying Elementary Education and Information Technology. A 2002 graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School, he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 18. At SRU, Shanbarger is President of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity - Mu Chapter.

Other members of the Computer Science faculty attending ISECON 2005 were Dr. Michael P. Conlon, Professor Frank Hulick, and Dr. Adel Fergany.  Dr. Conlon presented a peer-reviewed paper, "Is There a Role for Open Source Software in Systems Analysis?" which he co-authored with Prof. Hulick.  Their paper will also be published in the ISECON 2005 Proceedings.  Dr. Conlon served as invited chair of a refereed paper session.   These four faculty members--Joseph, Conlon, Hulick, and Fergany--were designated Information Systems faculty for the recent successful ABET accreditation.
