Dr. Sam R. Thangiah, computer science, and computer science majors
Jeremy Palermo, Butler, and Anthony Pitluga, Slippery Rock, attended the
international joint conference of the Canadian Operations Research Society
and Institute of Operations Research and Management Science in May 2004
at Banff, Canada. Dr. Thangiah chaired a session titled “Metastrategies for
Complex Routing Problems.” Jeremy Palermo presented a paper titled
“The Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Windows.” Jeremy has been
conducting undergraduate research into solving complex vehicle routing
problems involving the pickup and delivery of customers. Anthony Pitluga has
been conducting undergraduate research into solving vehicle routing problems
in which trucks can start from multiple depots and are restricted in the types of
locations and customers that can be serviced. Anthony will be presenting his
research work at the Computer-Aided Scheduling of Public Transport
conference in August 2004.

 

Government and Public Affairs Department will present its 10th Annual
Holocaust Remembrance Program at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2004 in
Miller Auditorium.  This lecture given by Stephen Berk of Union College will
detail "The Experience of the Hungarian Jews in the Holocaust."  The lecture
is free and open to the public and this year's program is dedicated to the late
Dr. Sylvan Cohen who initiated SRU's annual remembrance program.

 

Computer Science Department - the computer science programming team
placed fourth in a field of 16 teams in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Programming
Contest held at CMU. Congratulations to team members: Megan Webberking,
Bryan Wilson, and Suneth Rupasinghe.

 

U.S. Army ROTC program held their commissioning ceremony on Saturday,
December 13, 2003 for Roger L. Clancy (Medical Service Corps) and Candace
J. Sulkowski (Army Nurse Corps). Congratulations!


Computer Science Department - Dr. Sam Thangiah has been invited to give a
presentation entitled "Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory" at
the University of Malaysia in December 2003. Co-authors are William
Mennell (SRU alumni), Bryan Wilson and Anthony Pituluga (current SRU
undergraduate).

 



Congratulations to the School of Business's American Express Planning
Invitational Team
for qualifying for the national finals which will be held
at the company's headquarters in Minneapolis on April 21-24, 2004. Team
members are: Jesse Cline of Somerset, Jim Kuminkoski of Prospect and Joe
Yamrozik of Pittsburgh. For further information please contact the team

Congratulations go to: Russ Eury, Jeff Fields, Phil Gryskewicz, Laura

from a 32-day Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps National Advanced
Leadership Camp held at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Student's Traveled to Calw, Germany over Spring Break as Part of Class Experience

Dr. Andy Chatterjee, Associate Professor, Marketing, School of Business, accompanied 16 SRU students to Calw, Germany as part of their classroom experience in International Marketing.  Students had the opportunity to attend lectures and tour the following sites:  Reutlingen University of Applied Science; Daimler Chrysler headquarters at Stuttgart; lecuture on International Marketing Strategies of IBM; Tour of the Black Forest; guided tours of the city and cultural visits were also a part of the trip.





 


Army ROTC Promotion Ceremony

SRU faculty and staff was invited to attend a promotion ceremony for Captain Weiland (SRU Military Science) who was promoted from Captain to Major. The ceremony took place on Monday, March 3, 2003 in the Alumni House at 300pm.



ROTC Received Liberty Brigade Commander's Certificates

Military Science: The ROTC program has received two Liberty Brigade Commander's Certificates for attaining the third-highest mission percentage within the second brigade. Col. Mark A. Cianchetti, headquartered at Fort Dix, New Jersey, noted that the SRU unit, led by Lt. Col. Steven Stevens, left had achieved 164 percent its assigned mission in commissioning second lieutenants for the year. The ROTC program at SRU is recognized as being in the top 10 percent in the nation because of these achievements. The awards included $1,000 in cash to be used for equipment and cadet travel.

Harris, JD, Nuremberg Trial Prosecutor and Creator of the School of Law's Institute for Global Legal Studies Washington University was on campus to present "Nuremberg & The Rule of Law" on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 in Swope Auditorium at 4:30 pm. Ninth Annual Holocaust Remembrance Program (Part 2)
On Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 4:30 pm, in Miller Auditorium, Slippery Rock University will be honored to host a speech by Dr. Christopher R. Browning, entitled "Initiating The Final Solution".  (*A lecture explaining how the Nazis came to embark on the path to genocide.)

Dr. Browning currently teaches at the University of North Caroling, Chapel Hill. His best-known work is Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland.   This lecture will be Part II of the Ninth Annual Holocaust Remembrance Program.
