Department News:

CBISS - The School of Business will add a new major.  Students will have an opportunity to earn a bachelor of science in business administration degree with a major in health services management.

CBISS - Slippery Rock University and Butler County Community College signed an agreement on December 3, 2004 which will enable BC3 students to transition into a total of 28 transition programs at SRU.  The College of Business, Information, and Social Science's four communication tracks, information systems, and social work majors are among the new programs added.  Programs in education and business were among the previous transition programs approved. CBISS - Thirteen SRU Faculty were recognized for their outstanding teaching and mentoring at the Greek Life's Annual Apple Polishing and Scholarship Recognition Reception.  Among those honored are; Dr. Amy Walters, communication (by Alpha Sigma Tau), Dr. James Laux, communication (by Delta Zeta), and Dr. Mark Daniels, political science (by Theta Xi). 

Communication - Dr. Thomas Flynn presented, "'Swift Boats a Coming!': The Ideological Function of Vietnam Revisionism in the Swift Boat Ads" and escorted and directed SRU communications at the ECA conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 25-May 1, 2005.

Communication - Dr. Mark Banks gave presentation at the Eastern Communication Association Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 30, 2005.

Communication - Dr. Mark Chase gave presentation at the Eastern Communication Association Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 30, 2005.

Communication - Dr. Valerie Swarts presented "The Patriot Act:  The Rhetorical Power of the Law" and "The Promotion of Stereotypes in "Shark Tale":  A Symbolic Analysis" at the Eastern Communication Association Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 28-30, 2005.  

Communication - Dr. Mark Banks presented "The Origins of the BEA Communication Technology Division" at the Broadcast Education Association Conference in Las Vegas, NV on April 20-24, 2005.

Communication - held it's 2005 Honors Week Activities on March 28, 2005 - April 2, 2005.  A few things the week included were:  interactive workshops, common hour programs, and the honors banquet on Saturday April 2nd.

Communication - Dr. Mark Banks lead an external review of the Communication program at the University of West Florida on March 2-5, 2005 in Pensacola, Florida.

Communication - Dr. Robert E. Fidoten presented a paper titled "Dissing Content:  Era of the Common Man" at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and the Humanities. (posted February of 2005).

Communication - Dr. Joseph Harry co-authored a research article in the current edition of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, and has also published a chapter in a new book on visual communication. (posted February of 2005).

Computer Science - Dr. Sam Thangiah and co-authors Yai Oladokum Laleye and Brian Lawson presented "An Auctioning System for Solving Vehicle Routing Problems" and "Team Orienteering Problem" at the International Federation of Operation Research Societies (IFORS) triennial conference in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 11-16, 2005.  

Computer Science - Ms. Patricia Joseph presented "Ethics at Work:  Embedding Ethics in the Information Systems Curriculum" at the 8th Annual Ethics and Teaching Conference at St. Louis, MO on June 23-26, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. Michael Conlon presented "Rocktest:  A Programming Contest Management System" at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges:  Northeastern Region (CCSC-NE) in Providence, RI on April 22-23, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. David Valentine presented "Playing Around in the CS Curriculum: Reversi as a Teaching Tool" at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges:  Northeastern Region (CCSC-NE) in Providence, RI on April 22-23, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. David Dailey presented "SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics with JavaScript and HTML" at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference in Bloomsburg, PA on April 1-2, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. Adel Fergany presented "Project Management:  A Balance Between Theory and Practice" at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference in Bloomsburg, PA on April 1-2, 2005.

Computer Science - Ms. Patricia Joseph presented "Information Systems Course-Embedded Ethics:  The Slippery Rock University Model" at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference in Bloomsburg, PA on April 1-2, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. Paul Mullins and Dr. Deborah Whitfield presented "Increasing Retention in CS 101 and CS 102" at ACM's International Conference in St. Louis, MO on February 23-27, 2005.

Computer Science - Dr. Deborah Whitfield presented at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in College Eastern 2004 Conference and students accompanied her to participate in the Computer Programming Contest in Baltimore, MD (posted October of 2004).

Computer Science - reported they had three students intern at Glaxo-Smith-Kline this summer 2004:  Chibuike Ejim, Suneth Rupasinghe and Gayan Ondaatjie.  Their supervisors had nothing but praise for these students and the program.

Military Science - the Army ROTC program was recognized again for successfully achieving its academic year mission in 2003-04 in commissioning second lieutenants for the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserves and the Army National Guard.  Col. Thomas McCool, commander, 2nd brigade, eastern region, cadet command visited campus to present the 2004 award, an engraved baseball bat as "Most Valuable Program - Mission Accomplished." Political Science - Dr. George Brown accompanied Slippery Rock University students to London, England on May 13-28, 2005.

Political Science - Dr. Leon Bass (guest speaker) visited the department's Holocaust course and presented a program for the university community entitled "Racism, Anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust - from the perspective of an African-American."  Dr. Bass was a member of a racially segregated Combat Engineers Battalion that fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate Buchenwald concentration/slave labor camp in April, 1945.  For further information you can email Dr. Martin at:  richard.martin@sru.edu.

Political Science - Dr. Mark R. Daniels presented "Closing Military Bases:  The Politics of Termination" at the Pennsylvania Political Science Association meeting in Middletown, PA on March 31 - April 2, 2005.

Political Science - Dr. Walter Powell presented "Recent Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court in Criminal Law and Procedure from Selected Cases" at the annual meeting of the American Criminal Justice Society in Chicago, IL on March 17-19, 2005.

School of Business - Dr. Albena Iossifova presented "When Low Service Leads to High Customer Satisfaction - The role of the consultant in the implementation of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 quality management systems" at the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) Annual Conference in Chicago, IL on April 29 - May 2, 2005.

School of Business - Dr. Theresa Wajda presented "Conceptualizing a Link between "Perceived" Control and Superstitious Consumption Behavior" at the International Academy of Business Disciplines (IABD) 2005 Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 4-10, 2005.

School of Business - held it's annual School of Business Week on March 14-18, 2005.  The week focused on the importance of networking, resume writing and interviewing as part of the agenda.  

School of Business - Dr. Andy Chatterjee and Dr. Theresa Wajda presented a paper at the 2005 Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators (ACME) Conference in Dallas, TX on March 3-5, 2005.

School of Business - Dr. Jesus Valencia presented "The Impact of Institutional Change in Colombia's Labor Market" at the Eastern Economics Association meetings on March 3-6, 2005 in New York, NY.

School of Business - Dr. Frederick Tannery presented a research paper at the Eastern Economics Association meeting in New York, New York on March 3-6, 2005.

School of Business - "Sisters... The Pioneer Women in Healthcare from 1847 to 2005" presentation was held on March 1, 2005 in the Eisenberg Auditorium.  Speakers for this program were:  Sister Louise Grundish, SC Sisters of Charity (Seton Hill); Sister Anne Kull, VSC Vincentian Sisters of Charity; and Sister Marguerite Coyne, CSJ Sisters of St. Joseph.  This program is co-sponsored by the School of Business and the Women's Studies Program as part of SRU's celebration of Women in History month.

School of Business - Dr. Andy Chatterjee paper "The Relationship of Character Structure to Persuasive Communication in Advertising" was accepted for publication in Vol. 96 of the Psychological Reports Journal. (posted March 2005)

School of Business - Congratulations to Dr. Susan L. Lubinski for receiving the designation of "Certified Fraud Examiner" (CFE) by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.  CFEs are responsible for resolving a wide range of allegations of fraud and white-collar crime.  Dr. Lubinski has successfully met a stringent set of criteria and now joins the ranks of over 14,000 business and government professionals who have earned the certification.  Dr. Lubinski is a licensed attorney and certified public accountant and is an Associate Professor at Slippery Rock University where she teaches business law and accounting. Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work - Dr. David R. Champion presented "The Entitled Street Criminal and Perceptions of Police Status" at the Annual Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice Educators (PACJE) in Middletown, PA on April 8-10, 2005.

Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work - Dr. Esther Skirboll presented a paper at The Society for Applied Anthropology Annual Meeting on April 6-9, 2005 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work - Dr. Herman A. Jones, Jr presented "The Success Model and Time Management" at the National Black Graduate Student Association (NBGSA) in Charlette, NC on March 17-20, 2005.

 

Alumni and Student News:

BISS - Congratulations to the following three students:  Lauren S. Arthur (Human Resources and Management double major) for being selected as Flag Bearer for the University; and Matthew R. Beilstein (Computer Science) and Kimberly Dishler (Communication) were selected to serve as Student Marshal's for the College of Business, Information, and Social Sciences at May, 2005 Commencement.

BISS - Congratulations to Nichole D. Anthony (Health Service Administration) and Danielle M. Trautman (Marketing and Communication double major) for being selected as Student Marshal's to represent the College of Business, Information, and Social Sciences at December, 2004 Commencement.

BISS - The College of Business, Information, and Social Sciences Student Advisory Board met on November 30, 2004.  Student appointments were made by recommendation from the student's major department faculty.

Communication - Congratulations to the following students: Jeffrey Ankney, Dawn Hockenberry, and Nicholas Pentz!  A panel of judges has selected their project, "BeaveRun Motorsports Complex," for an Honorable Mention Award in the Student Interactive Multimedia Competition at the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 20-24, 2005.  The students will accompany Dr. Mark Chase to the convention where the award will be presented at the Awards session during the convention.

Communication - students (Mike Mallory & Greg Reedy) accompanied Dr. Mark Zeltner who will present a session "Behind Closed Doors:  Ethical Pitfalls About Writing About the Personal Misconduct of Administrators" at the National College Media Convention and conduct newspaper reviews in New York, NY on March 17-20, 2005.

Communication - The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) featured an hour-long program called "Journalists' Roundtable" on April 14, 2005.  Sheryl McGlory, News Editor; Greg Reedy, Sports Editor; and Kim Dishler, Editor in Chief of The Rocket sat down for a discussion with PCN's Bill Bova regarding issues that have an impact on SRU as well as residents across the state.

Communication - students accompanied Ms. Linda Burkley on a tour of MARC advertising in Pittsburgh, PA on February 24, 2005 to see first hand the daily activities of working in Advertising and Public Relations.

Communication - congratulations to Namiko Tsukidate, communication major from Japan, for being one of four SRU students to receive the Marjorie Stevenson Scholarship. (posted Nov. 2, 2004)

Communication - the following students (Kimberly Beasock, William Braatz, Carissa Lounder, Ashley Martin, Courtney Pack, Andrea Romo, Laura Simonelli, and Danielle Tratuman) attended the Public Relations Student Society of America National Conference on October 22-24, 2004 in New York City.

Communication - the following students (Erika Evans, Melissa Leslie, Carissa Lounder, Andrea Romo, and Shannon Strang) traveled with Dr. James Laux to New York on October 15-17, 2004 and presented papers at the New York State Communication Association annual communication conference.  Student co-authors are:  John Hyle, Gregg Frantz, and Jill Dittmer.

Computer Science - congratulations to Michael L. McNamara for receiving one of the ten national Upsilon Pi Epsilon scholarships sponsored by the Microsoft Corporation.  The scholarship recipients will be formally recognized by UPE and the Microsoft Corporation at the April 2005 UPE Convention which will be held in Shanghai, China

Computer Science - Stephan Browarny and Jennifer Lengel attended and participated in the computer programming contest at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference at Bloomsburg, PA on April 1-2, 2005.

Computer Science - student's in the computer science program participated in a Job Shadow Day which was held on February 15, 2005.  The Job Shadow day is used to mentor students by assigning them to a mentor from different high-tech organizations for a day.  The mentors allow the students to shadow them for the day in meetings, decisions and frustrations faced in the real world.  This allows students to better prepare themselves to enter the workforce and gain experiences in areas that would be advantageous when it comes time to job hunt.  Business participants and student:  AETHON (Greg Barker, Bryan Lawson, Matt Beilstein); HIGHMARK (Chris Barker, Matthew Maricone, Nishita Joyappa, Joseph Wheeler); PIRATES (Brian Decima); BAYER (Gayan Ondaatjie, Yuwan Santhiapillai, Joe Gresick, Sherri Mack, Brian Ryder, Mike Knight); and MELLON (Michael Wacht, Kristi Ann Cordetsky, Robert Makowski, Chuck Kubit).

Computer Science - Dr. Sam R. Thangiah and three undergraduate computer science students (Mike McNamara, Yai O. Laleye, and Tony Pitluga) presented at the 9th INFORMS Computing Society Conference in Annapolis, Maryland on January 7, 2005.  This is an International Conference which is held every two years.  

Computer Science - the following students (Greg Barker, Andrew Beers, Matthew Beilstein, Stephan Browarny, Brian Lawson, and Jennifer Lengel) attended and participated in the student computer programming contest at the ACM ECNA Conference on November 5-6, 2004 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Military Science (ROTC) - LTC William Bialozor accompanied 13 cadets in the Military Science course Officership and the Profession of Arms (MS 402) on a staff ride for a Tour of the Antietam Battlefield in Hagerstown, MD on March 19-20, 2005.

Military Science - 9 cadets (Brian Smedick, Steven Barron, Christopher Loudon, Brant Leyden, Vernon Webb, Lisa Hatfield, Christopher Mathis, Nathaniel Thomson, and Joseph Lustick) and 3 cadre members (LTC William Bialozor, CPT Stephen Sullivan, and SGT Kelly Orth) traveled to Arlington, VA on October 22-24, 2004 to compete in the Army Ten Miler Competition.

Political Science - Dr. George Brown and student/co-author Brian Hoffman presented a paper, "Japan's Changing Foreign Policy:  The "Normal Country" Military and Challenges to the Japanese Consitution" at The Asian Studies Development Program's Eleventh Annual Conference in Whittier, CA on April 20-24, 2005.  Student Namiko Tsukidate was also a co-author of the paper.

Political Science - Dr. Daniel McIntosh and the following students (Gregory Miller and Ivelina Popova) traveled to the PA Political Science Association Meeting to present "Norms in the Regulation of Private Military Companies" (Dr. McIntosh) and "The Student Intelligence Agency:  Bringing Counterterrorist Intelligence Into the Classroom" (presentation of pedagogy and student research) on April 1-2, 2005 in Harrisburg, PA.

Political Science - Dr. George Brown and Brian Hoffman (student) presented a paper at the Japan Studies Assn. conference in San Francisco, CA on January 5-9, 2005.

Political Science - Vincent Brown, Political Science major, is participating in The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) program during the spring 2005 semester.  He is currently working for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as part of the 15-week internship sponsored by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Political Science - the following students (Jeremy Anderson, Vincent Brown, Roberto Dumas, Nichole Gutt, Rose Iksic, Laura Lubinski, and Michelle Scanlon) attended the Model UN conference hosted by the University of PA in Philadelphia, PA on November 11-15, 2004.

School of Business - the following students (Matt Brown, Yvonne Donovan, Lynette Mullan, Bethany Tahon, Sara Workman, and Ralph Zeiler) accompanied Dr. Thomas Tanner to the American Marketing Association (AMA) Conference in New Orleans, LA on April 13-17, 2005.

School of Business - the following students (Mark Coyle, Roberto Habaue, Moamer Kasum, Michaelene Kubit, Timothy Malego, Richard Sutphen) will attend the International Academy of Business Disciplines (IABD) Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on April 6-8, 2005.

School of Business - students accompanied Mr. Thomas Tanner on a tour of MARC Advertising Agency in Pittsburgh, PA on February 24, 2005 to see first hand the daily activities of working in Advertising and Public Relations.

School of Business - Fred M. Vitale, Jr. attended the region meeting for APICS on February 19, 2005 in Dayton, OH.

School of Business - Dr. Bruce Orvis and 10 Alpha Kappa Psi SRU students (Justin Badger, Nicole Briano, Erin Buzzelli, Nikki Iheme, Veronica LaManna, Amber Nickols, Kelly Porter, Jesse Rapsack, Bridget Sircy, and Dan Yerace) traveled to Philadelphia, PA on February 11-13, 2005 to attend the regional "Success Institutes" conference conducted by the National Alpha Kapa Psi office.  

School of Business - the following students (Rachel Chapman, Drew Decock, Andrea Mankey, Michael Marshall, Stephanie Matter, and Richard Moore, III) attended the 2004 Institute of Management Accountants Student Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX on November 11-14, 2004.

School of Business - reported that Pavone, a full-service advertising agency based in Harrisburg, has hired Amanda Lomire (SRU graduate - bachelor of science degree in business administration and marketing) as a media assistant. (posted September 2004)

Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work - students (Jason Clark, Eric Nelson, and Nicholas Perella) attended the Undergraduate PA SSHE Anthropology Conference in Bloomsburg, PA on April 16-17, 2005.

Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work - students (Rick DiBello, Sharon Dougal, Sharon Geibel, Cheryl Huf, Tiffany McKinley, Jessica Speer, Nicole Velvivis, Kellyn Hoffman, Jen Yue) traveled with retired SRU volunteer, Social Work Club advisor, Dr. Deborah Hammond to Washington, DC on April 8-10, 2005.  The field trip to tour the Capitol was arranged through Rep. Phil English, they will also tour various Smithsonian Museums.

Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work - student Laura Lubinski present a paper on corporate fraud at the American Society for Criminology National Conference on November 19-20, 2004 in Nashville, TN. 

Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work - eight students and Dr. Ahmad Khalili attended the 54th Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Sociological Society Meetings on October 22-23, 2004 in Philadelphia, PA.  Laura Lubinski and Melanie Sugar presented papers; the following were in attendance (Ebony Bishop, Stephen A.
