- Dr. Mark Zeltner presented "Sexual Minorities: The Ethical
Pitfalls of Covering the Gay Community on a Conservative Campus," and participated in a panel discussion "Ethics in the Newsroom for Reporters,
Editors and Photographers," and reviewed student newspapers at the
Associated College Press Convention in Los Angeles, CA on March 2-5, 2006.
- The 2006
Theodore Walwick lecture is set for Tuesday, April 25th in Spotts World
Cultures Building. Brian O'Connell, associate professor of computer and
philosophy at Central Connecticut State University will address the issues of
"Ethics, Law and Technology in an Open Society." The Walwik
lectures are sponsored by a gift from Professor Emeritus Theodore Walwik,
former communication department faculty member.
- Dr. Amy Walters attended the APSCUF Leadership Workshop in Harrisburg, PA on
May 17-20, 2006.
Computer Science
- Congratulations to SRU's Computer Science Department for
receiving accreditation by the Computing Accreditation Commission
of ABET, Inc. The accreditation recognizes the departments
program in computer science as well as five concentrations in its
information systems area. As noted in the RockPride Dr.
Valentine (department chair) is quoted as saying, "Of all the
computing degrees offered in Pennsylvania, only eight are
accredited in computer science with only three accredited in
information systems. SRU stands out as one of the best
choices available to students wanting to study computing!"
- Dr. Sam Thangiah developed Xcalibur, an automated computer
literacy testing program to test computer literacy levels of SRU
students. The program is being used for the Computer Literacy
testing at SRU.
- Mr. Frank Hulick presented "Hacking & Hackers - How to Stay
Protected" at the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the Association of
Certified Fraud Examiners in September 2005.
- Mr. Frank Hulick presented "Computer & Information Security

- Dr. Sam Thangiah participated in the Introduction to GIS Workshop in

- Dr. Sam Thangiah attended the ROBO 2006 Business Conference & Expo, the
International Business Development Event for the Mobile Robotics and
Intelligent Systems Industry, in Pittsburgh, PA on June 20-21, 2006.
Military Science
- CPT Leise attended the 2nd Brigade ROTC Recruiting Operations
Officer's Conference in Atlantic City, NJ from
September 19-21, 2005.
- The ROTC Battalion sponsored a day of training for 50 cadets
from the Butler H.S. Junior ROTC on September 24,
2005. The SRU cadets trained the Butler cadets
on the LRC and rappel Tower followed by a BBQ
lunch.
- COL Cummings, the new 2nd Bde ROTC Commander, visited SRU on
September 29, 2005 to meet the cadre and receive a briefing on the
ROTC Battalion's structure and operations. He conducted office
calls with Dean Russell and President Smith. He also conducted
an interactive luncheon with 3 cadets from each academic
class. In the afternoon, he received a briefing from the
cadets and observed training during the conduct of the LRC,
Rappel Tower, and Land Navigation lab periods.
- LTC Bialozor and MSG Monroe attended the 2nd Brigade ROTC
Commander's Conference in Carlisle, PA from October
24-26, 2005.
- Mr. Bower attended the Human Resource Administrator's Course at
Fort Monroe, VA from October 16-22, 2005.
- MAJ Sullivan provided a seminar on leadership assessment for
the department heads within the Student Life Administration during
their retreat at the Clarion River Lodge. His presentation
highlighted techniques used by U.S. Army Cadet Command to assess
and train leaders. He engaged the Student Life leaders to apply
these concepts/techniques to their interaction with student leaders
across campus.
- LTC Bialozor provided a presentation on Non-Government
Organizations and their interaction with the U.S. Army
in Afghanistan on November 6, 2005 as part of a 3-day
exhibition sponsored by the SRU Potters Guild.
- LTC Bialozor was the featured speaker at the Veteran's Day
remembrance service sponsored by Alumni Relations on November 11,
2005. The ROTC provided a color guard for the event to raise the
National, State, and SRU flags.
- Congratulations to SRU's Army ROTC program for receiving its third Cadet
Command Award for meeting its commissioning mission for 2005 in ceremonies
held in March 2006. Col. John Cummings from Cadet Command's 2nd Brigade
at Ft. Dix, N.J. was on campus recently to present the award to Dr. Russell,
Lt. Col. Bialozor, and Master Sgt. Monroe.
Political Science
- Dr. Walter Powell attend the annual meeting of the American
Trial Lawyers Association and participate in continuing education
classes on July 22-28, 2005 in Toronto, Canada.
- Alice Kaiser-Drobney was elected by the National Association of
Campus Executive Directors affiliated with American Humanics, as
the association's Northeastern Regional Representative for
2005-06.
- Ms. Alice Kaiser-Drobney presented a workshop,
"Service-Learning in Nonprofit Management Education" at the Academy
of Management International Conference in Honolulu on August 6,
2005.
- Dr. Walter V. Powell attended a law course at Clarion University,
at the Center for Legal Education on October 28, 2005.
- Dr. George Brown attended and presented "Reflections on War and War
Crimes: Japanese Wartime Atrocities in Nanjing, The Atomic Bombing of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Ordinary Men in the Holocaust, and the Case of the My
Lai Massacre" at Mid-Atlantic Region, Association for Asian Studies
Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA on October 29, 2005.
- Dr. Sharon Sykora arranged for a visit to Old Economy Village for a special
guided tour in conjunction with her Utopias class in Ambridge, PA on March 25
- April 1, 2006.
- Dr. Sharon Sykora arranged for a presentation on March 27, 2006 by Patricia
Redshaw to discuss Plum Village and the community of mindful living. She
also discussed and taught some practices of the community. Ms. Redshaw
is a buddhist and member of the community of Mindful Living. She teaches
meditation in the tradition of thich Nhat hanh.
- Holocaust Survivor, Dr. Nechama Tec spoke at the Annual
Remembrance Program on March 29, 2006 in Miller Auditorium. Dr. Tec,
professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut, Stamford presented,
"Jewish Resistance: Women, Men and the Holocaust."
- Dr. Richard Martin presented a paper on Hannah Arendts "Conception of
Justice" at the Political Science Association Meeting in Harrisburg, PA on
March 31, 2006.
- Dr. Richard Martin accompanied SRU students on the March 2006 seminar
program to Munich, Germany.
- Dr. Heather Frederick presented "Female Candidates and Campaign
Contributions - An Update on Progress?" at the Pennsylvania Political
Science meeting in Harrisburg, PA on March 30 - April 1, 2006.
- Dr. Don Kerchis presented "The Impact of U.S. International
Education Policy on Democratic Values, Attitudes and Behavior" at the
Pennsylvania Political Science (PPS) meeting in Harrisburg, PA on March 31 - April
1, 2006.
- Dr. Mark Daniels presented "The Politics of Disaster Management:
The Evolution of the Federal Emergency Management Agency" at the
Pennsylvania Political Science Association Annual Meeting on March 31-April 1,
2006 in Harrisburg, PA.
- Dr. Mark Daniels presented "Toward Liquor Control: A
Retrospect" at the 2006 National Conference of the American Society for
Public Administration on April 1-4, 2006 in Denver, Colorado.
- Margaruite Coyne, CSJ and Sister Louise Grundish were invited to make a
presentations about life in a religious community and lead a class discussion
about life in a religious community. She has been a nun for many years.
They were invited to Dr. Sharon Sykora's class on April 17, 2006.
School of Business
- Dr. John Bavaro published an article "Sisters in Health Care
History Project" in the July/August 2005 Archival Outlook
Periodical.
- SRU Alumni Guest Lecture Series welcomed Dr. Robert Murray
(1971 and '74 SRU Graduate) who presented "Science, Sports and
Business: The Gatorade Formula" to SRU students, faculty and
staff on September 29, 2005 in Eisenberg Auditorium. A fellow
of the American College of Sports Medicine at Gatorade, Dr. Murray
oversees scientific research in a variety of areas in exercise
science and sports nutrition. This visit was arranged by John
Buttermore, School of Business.
- Dr. John Bavaro was selected as the on-site reviewer for the
Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
- Dr. Diane Galbriath presented a paper "Does Talent Matter?" at
the PHRA Conference in Pittsburgh, PAon October 4, 2005.
- Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh presented "The Effects of
Globalization and Culture on International Corporate Cash Holdings"
at the annual meeting of the Association for Global Business (AGB)
in Miami Beach, Florida on November 16-19, 2005.

- Dr. Donald Tompkins presented "Recall of Experientially Linked and
Non-Experientially Linked Material Under Incidental Learning Conditions"
at the International Academy of Business Disciplines (IABD) Conference in San Diego, CA on April 5-9, 2006.
- School of Business held their annual "School of Business Week"
starting Monday, April 17th. The theme for this year was "join us
now....or work for us later". The student organizations include
Alpha Kappa Psi (business honorary), the American College of Healthcare
Executives, American Marketing Association, Association for Operations
Management, Student Accounting Society and the Society for Human Resource
Management.
- Dr. Albena Iossifova will take her Operations Management I class to tour the
General Electric plant in Grove City, PA on June 26, 2006.
Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work
- Dr. Kundan Bhatia attended the American Sociological
Association 100th Meeting and presented "Globalization in Asia in
the Session: Challenges to Democracy, Equality and Social Justice"
on August 13-16, 2005.
- Dr. Ahmad Khalili attended the American Sociological
Association 100th Meeting as president and representative of the
Pennsylvania Sociological Society (also attended the State
Association Annual Meeting), Dr. Khalili also presented "Obstacles
to Development of Democracy In the Middle East" on August 13-16,
2005.
- Two appointed accreditors from The National Council on Social
Work Education visited campus on October 5-7, 2005 for review
and reaffirmation of the Social Work Program.
- Dr. Katherine Hardesty and Dr. David Champion organized and
held a Criminal Justice Job Fair in the SRU University Union on
Tuesday, October 25, 2005. Several Criminal Justice employers
were represented such as the PA State Police, the PA Civil Service
Commission, Youth Development Center of New Castle and George
Junior of Grove City.
- Dr. Kundan Bhatia traveled to Udaipur, India to visit and meet with
representatives regarding exchange programs on November 4,
2005.

- Social Work Open
House scheduled for Thursday, April 27th at the Regional Learning Alliance
in Cranberry Woods. The open house is for those interested in a career
in social work. For further information on this program, please contact Dr.
Thomas Bechard with the department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social
Work at Slippery Rock University.
- Dr. Ahmad Khalili will present a paper "Explaining Adolescent Violent
Behavior: An Integrated Causal Perspective on Delinquency" at the
First Annual Stockholm Criminology Symposium at Stockholm University in

- Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell visited SRU on Wednesday, April 19th for an
interview with Travis Trufley in Eisenberg Classroom Building's Auditorium.
Trufley is a communication major from Boyers. The interview took place
as part of a communication class assignment taught by Dr. Brett Barnett.

Analysis?" co-authored with Mr. Frank W. Hulick.
- SRU student Andrew Shanbarger will accompany Ms. Patricia
Joseph to attend and present peer-review paper "Computer Usage in
the Classroom" at the Information Systems Education Conference
(ISECON) in Columbus, OH on October 5-9, 2005. Ms. Joseph will also
present "Ethics in the Pedagogy of Information Systems" and Brandon
Himes's peer-review paper "Information Warfare" ("Meritorious
Writing Award" was presented to Brandon Himes and Ms. Patricia
Joseph for this paper).
- Seven students (Andrew Beers, Stephan Brownary, Corey Callihan, Alex Cline,
Philip Gorley, Jennifer Lengel, and Brian Turner) accompanied Dr. Deborah
Whitfield to AMC Intercollegiate Programming Contest in Ashland, OH on
November 4-5, 2005.
- Industry Awareness Night - February 8, 2006 from 5pm - 8pm was held at
the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry Township, PA. This program
is for juniors and seniors from the Computer Science Department.
The program consisted of a number of industry representatives who gave
presentations on topics such as resume, communication skills, dressing for
success, portfolio's, preparing for an interview, job search, to name a few.
- Job Shadow Day - February 21, 2006 at one of many job sites. Students,
juniors and seniors from the Computer Science Department in groups of 5 or 6 visited different host companies. The hosting companies can design
any program that they believe would help the students understand what the
company does, what types of skills it is looking for in a student or impart
any knowledge that would make the students aware of how to prepare for a
career.

Science High School Programming contest was held in Eisenberg Classroom
Building on February 21, 2006. Follow the link for results and

- Computer Science
team captures first place in statewide competition in Pennsylvania
Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference.
The competition was held in Indiana, PA on April 7-8, 2006. The teams
were given four hours to solve nine programming problems in Java or C++
computer programming language. The senior team includes Andrew Beers,
Corey Callihan, and Joshua Petry; sophomore team includes Chris Adams, Chris
Chapman, and Brian Turner. Dr. Whitfield and Dr. Mullins are the team
advisors and accompanied the students.
Military Science
- The ROTC Battalion entered two teams in the 21st Annual Army
Ten Miler held in Washington, D.C.on October 2, 2005. The 11 cadets
and 3 faculty members toured the Nation's Capitol on Saturday and
completed the race on Sunday. The race was rerouted and actually
extended to 11.4 miles due to a security alert after the race had
already started.
- 14 Cadets will accompany MAJ Stephen Sullivan for training on obstacle
course & EST for Ranger Challenge Land Nav Course in Camp Dawson, WV on
October 11, 2005.
- The ROTC Battalion entered a 10-cadet team in the annual
Brigade Ranger Challenge competition held at Fort Indiantown Gap,
PA from October 21-23, 2005. The cadets competed against teams from
all 20 universities within the Brigade (PA, NJ, NYC). The team
finished 10th overall and 2nd in their flight. The team competed in
an Army Physical Fitness Test, hand grenade assault course,
obstacle course, one-rope bridge water crossing, orienteering,
tactics written exam, weapons disassembly/assembly, and 10km foot
march events
- The ROTC Battalion conducted a Field Training Exercise at
Ravenna, OH from November 11-13, 2005. The 46 cadets and 5 cadre
conducted training in garrison operations, day and night land
navigation, day and night tactics lanes, and establishment of a
tactical patrol base. The cadets gained valuable experience in
developing their leadership and tactical skills.
- The ROTC will commission two new 2LTs on December 17, 2005. 2LT
Shad Thompson will graduate with a degree in Business Management
with a Minor in Leadership.2LT Daniel Maigret will graduate
with a degree in History with a Minor in Leadership. Both of them
will be notified of their component and branch of service by
December 1, 2005.
- Military Science cadets (Kenneth Brennan, Lisa Hatfield, Kimberly
Herrick, Clay Johnson, Brandon Libert, David Lisovich, Ryan Neptune, and
Vernon Webb) accompanied LTC William Bialozor on the MS IV Staff Ride to
Antietam Battlefield in Maryland on March 4-5, 2006 as part of their cadet
command requirement.
Political Science
- Grace Franks traveled on November 4, 2005 to
Harrisburg, PA to interview for a spring 2006 position for
department's The Harrisburg Internship Program.
- Political Science Department hosted a reception on September
28, 2005 at the Alumni House for new and returning student
majors.Approximately 40 guests participated.
- Pi Sigma Alpha, the Honorary Student Political Science Society,
organized and hosted a dinner on October 27, 2005 at a local
restaurant.

Nickalaus Years and Dr. George Brown presented papers at the Asian Studies Development Program
National Conference at Nashville, TN on March 16-19, 2006. The following
papers were presented: "China's Rising Power and Tensions in
Sino-Japanese Relations" by Dr. Brown; "U.S. China Relations"
by Claudia Sadean; Rural Underdevelopment in China" by Noah True-Daniels;
and "The People's Liberation Army and China's Foreign Policy" by
Nickalaus Years.

in Greenville, PA on September 13, 2005. The class conducted an economic impact study of St. Paul Homes.

Andrew Wargo, Amanda Froelich, and Greg Mattocks) attended the Louis Navellier Investment Seminar in Cleveland, OH on
October 5, 2005.
- Laura Riegner accompanied by SRU sponsoring faculty member Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh,
traveled to Pittsburgh, PA on November 15, 2005 to receive a scholarship from
the Financial Executives International (FEI) Pittsburgh Chapter.

the National AMA Conference in Orlando, FL on March 23-26, 2006.
- School of Business students (Stephanie Boy, Jessica Dornin, and Michelle
Maruska) attended the American College of Healthcare Executives National
Congress (ACHE) in Chicago, IL on March 25-30, 2006.
- Ellin Saullo received a $1,000 scholarship from the Financial Executive
Institute (FEI) at the Duguesne Club in Pittsburgh, PA on April 18, 2006.
Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh, school of Business, accompanied Ms. Saullo as the
sponsoring faculty.
- Jeramy Genaway, Eric Lewis, and Stephen Sullivan students from the School of
Business competed, and came home with a third place win, at the Ameriprise
Planning Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 19-22, 2006.
Dr. John Misner accompanied the students and faculty advisor.

Annual Conference and Exposition in Washington, DC on June 24-28, 2006.

Alana Atchinson attended PA Association for Undergraduate
Social Work Education (PAUSWE) Annual Conference in State College,
PA on October 21-22, 2005.
- Heather Chatterjee, Tammy Eiselt, Sharon Geibel, James Gniewkowski, Nancy
Harper, Allison Landis, Pamela McVicker, and Daryl Ann Milcic accompanied Dr. Katherine Hardesty and Dr. Michael Stowe
to the Council on Social Work Education Conference in Chicago, IL on
February 16-19, 2006. At the conference, they were inducted into the department's honor society at the Hull House, the famous
settlement.
- Janice Benninger and Kelly Macurdy won the undergraduate student paper award
at the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice
Educators held in Harrisburgh, PA on April 8, 2006. Benninger and
Macurdy co-authored "Developing a Criminal Entitlement Scale" which
was based on research they conducted with Dr. David Champion,
Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work.
