- SRU Walwik
Freedom of Speech Lecture series was held on September 28, 2006 with guest
speaker Donald Fishman and on October 19, 2006 with guest speaker Jonathan
Turley. Both lectures were held in the new Advanced Technology &
Science Hall Auditorium at 8pm.

been awarded the top ranking in the "Debut" category for the
Division's competition.

- Dr. Michael Conlon, Dr. Adel Fergany, Ms. Patricia Joseph, and Dr. Paul
Mullins attended the "Alice" workshop ("Alice" is the
language the department will be teaching in the upcoming academic year) in
Pittsburgh, PA on July 24-30, 2006.

- Dr. Deborah Whitfield attended the faculty campus management

- Dr. Hongbo Zhou attended the National Science Foundation (NSF) day
workshop in Erie, PA on October 5-6, 2006.
- Ms. Patricia Joseph traveled as program evaluator for ABET/CAC
Accreditation visit to Bangor, Maine on October 14-18, 2006.
- Dr. David Valentine participated in a live WBUT Radio broadcast held at the Old
Stone House in Slippery Rock, PA on October 26, 2006.
- Dr. Sharadchandra Joshi participated in a presentation of workshops on
Surveilance Hotspot Geoinformatics at Jalgaon, India and Macau, China on
December 12, 2006 - January 14, 2007.
- Dr. David Dailey presented at Image and Meaning Workshop hosted by
Apple Computer and Harvard University in Cupertino, CA on February 1-3, 2007.
Dr. Dailey was one of 32 researchers sharing his research at the Image and
Meaning Regional Workshop, sponsored by Harvard University and Apple
Computer. Dr. Dailey explained his computer work related to
multi-dimensional space, in particular, work related to non-Euclidean space
and abstract spaces in the area of graph theory. He expects to remain
active with the group.
- Dr. David Valentine attended the PA Educational Technology Expo and
Conference (PETE & C) in Hershey, PA on February 11-12, 2007.
- The seventh
annual Computer Programming Competition was held in the Advanced
Technology and Science Hall on February 20, 2007. Fifteen schools participated in the days activities.
- Dr. David Valentine will attend Special Interest Group on Computer Science
Education (SIGCSE) 2007 Technical Symposium in Covington, KY on March 6-10,
2007.
- Ms. Patricia Joseph will make an invited poster representation and
facilitate a Birds of a Feathers Presentation at Special Interest Group on
Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) in Covington, KY on March 7-10,
2007.
- Dr. Deborah Whitfield will be a panel participant of "Assessing
Computer Science Programs: What we have Learned" and faculty poster
co-presenter: "Student Learning Outcomes and the Software Design
Life Cycle" at Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE)
2007 in Covington, KY on March 7-10, 2007.
- Dr. David Dailey will attend the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and
Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference in Lock Haven, PA on March
23-24, 2007.
- Dr. Michael Conlon will present "Progress Toward an Open-Standard
Office Software File Format" at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer
and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference at Lock Haven, PA on
March 23-24, 2007. 6 students will accompany Dr. Conlon on this trip to
participate in a computer programming contest.
- Dr. Paul Mullins will present a tutorial "Programming in Alice:
Pre-College to CS Intro" at the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and
Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference at Lock Haven, PA on March
23-24, 2007. He will also be coaching SRU students who will participate
in a computer programming contest.
- Ms. Patricia Joseph will attend a mapping workshop "An Introduction to
Geographic Information Systems Community Analysis" sponsored by New Urban
Research in Pittsburgh, PA on March 27, 2007.
- Dr. David Dailey will travel to Harvard University on March 28-29, 2007 for
continued work on his Image and Meaning software development.
- Dr. Deborah Whitfield will present paper "The Application of a Layered
Database Model" at the Consortium of Computer Science Colleges - South
Central (CCSC-SC) 2007 in Wichita Falls, TX on April 26-28,
2007. The paper is co-authored by the following faculty from the
Computer Science Department: Deborah Whitfield, Sharadchandra Joshi,
Frank Hulick, and Paul Mullins.
- Dr. David Valentine will attend NSF Chautauqua Short Course on teaching
object oriented programming in Dayton, OH on May 15-19, 2007.
- Dr. Adel Fergany will attend the 2007 Chautaugua Workshop "Using
Access, SQL, and XML in your Database Course" in Dayton, OH on June
12-15, 2007.
Military Science
- COL John Cummings, the new 2nd Bde ROTC Commander, visited SRU on
September 7,2006 to meet the cadre and receive a briefing on the ROTC
Battalion’s structure and operations as well as a tour of our new supply
building.
- The ROTC Battalion sponsored a day of training for 50 cadets from the Butler
H.S. Junior ROTC on September 23, 2006. The
SRU cadets trained the

cadets on the LRC and
Rappel
Tower
followed by a BBQ lunch.
- LTC Bialozor and MSG Monroe attended the 2nd Brigade ROTC
Commander’s Conference in Carlisle, PA from October 16-17, 2006.
- Army ROTC sponsored Army Branch Orientation Day on October 19, 2006 on the
SRU Cross Country Field. Army equipment such as an Apache helicopter,
striker vehicle, artillery cannons, humvees and other items were displayed.
- The ROTC Battalion held its annual
Holiday Party and Awards Lab on December 7, 2006.
Several professors from throughout the university were present.
Cadet Chris Spudic was the first recipient of the Fallen Comrades
Memorial Scholarship. The
scholarship was established in memory of past SRU ROTC Cadets who have been
killed in combat.

MAJ Leise and CPT Bandas attended the 2nd
Brigade ROTC Recruiting Operations Officer’s Conference in Atlantic City,
NJ from December 12-14, 2006.

Congratulations
to Major James Leise who was promoted on February 3, 2007.
He is a 1997 graduate of SRU and has served on active duty at
Fort Sill
,
OK
as well as Fort Bragg, NC prior to his return to SRU. He has
also been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The U.S. Army
has posted a recruitment
video on its Web site which was shot in part at Slippery Rock University
and features a former SRU student discussing life as an Army Reservist,
student and civilian.
Political Science
- Dr. George Brown traveled on June 16 through August 15, 2006 to direct a
Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Field Seminar in Malaysia and Singapore
for faculty from SRU and the Asian Studies Development Program. To read

- Dr. Walter Powell attended the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) annual meeting in Seattle,
Washington on July 14-20, 2006.
- Dr. Heather Frederick attended the American Political Science Association
(APSA) pre-conference on Women and Politics in Philadelphia, PA on August 29-31, 2006.
- Dr. Mark Daniels attended the American Political Science Association meeting
in Philadelphia, PA on August 31 - September 3, 2006.
- "Roundtable on National Security and Civil Liberties" honored
the U.S. Constitution on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at SRU's Student Union
(Room 204). Both faculty and students participated in the roundtable
and the topics discussed include: domestic spying; military
tribunals; non-uniformed military combatants; and CIA prisons.. The
project was headed by Dr. Mark Daniels.
- Ms. Tera Dent, Political Science Dpt Secretary, attended the PA Governor's
Conference for Women in Pittsburgh, PA on September 14, 2006.
- Ms. Alice Kaiser-Drobney has been invited
to be one of 12 members from the PA delegation to the National Nonprofit
Congress in Washington, DC in mid-October.
- Dr. Heather Frederick attended the PASSHE Women's Consortium Annual
Meeting in Indiana, PA on October 26-27, 2006.
- Dr. Donald Kerchis presented with the Professor of the Month Award for
October 2006 from the SRU chapter of Lambda Sigma.
- Dr. Don Kerchis presented "International Training Programs and Third

Association of Third World Studies conference in Winston-Salem, NC on November
1-4, 2006.

- Dr. Sharon Sykora attended the Harrisburg Internship Semester Recognition

- Dr. George Brown presented "North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Threat and
Possible Japanese Reactions" to the Japan Studies Association Conference in San
Diego, CA on January 4-7, 2007.
- Political
Science Film Night series presented "Who Killed the Electric
Car?," on February 27, 2007 as part of its Political Science Film Night.
- Political Science Department will host keynote speaker, Phil Wilhelm on
March 3, 2007 for Amnesty
International Darfur week program. The program title is "Stop
Genocide: The Crisis in Darfur Summit."
- Political Science Department will host keynote speaker, Susan
Bachrach, Ph.D. for the 13th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Program.
She will present "Nazi Medicine, Eugenics, and the Holocaust" on
Tuesday, March 6, 2007 in Miller Auditorium.
- Dr. Daniel McIntosh will present "The Evolution of Legal and Market

- Dr. Mark Daniels presented "Bureaucrats as Post Modern Movie
Heroes" at the 68th Annual PA Political Science Association meeting in
Kutztown University on March 29-31, 2007.
- Dr. Daniel McIntosh was named the 2006
Volunteer of the Year by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the American
Civil Liberties Union.
- Dr. Heather Frederick will attend the PASSHE Women's Consortium meeting in
State College, PA on April 13, 2007.
- Dr. Rich Martin will give a talk on the Holocaust, specifically Elli
Weisel's book "Night," to high school classes at John Glenn High
School in New Concord, OH on April 12-13, 2007.
- Guest speaker, Priscilla Wahrhaftig, was on campus April 23-26, 2007
to provide listener training to 19 volunteers and to set-up the Eyes Wide Open
exhibit of boots of deceased soldiers from Pennsylvania (those who have fallen
in battle in the Iraq war).
School of Business
- Dr. John A. Bavaro was awarded the "Outstanding Academic Advisor of the
Year" by the Student Government Association during the spring 2006
semester.
- Dr. Albena Iossifova attended the Institute for Operations Research and
Management Science (INFORMS) Annual Workshop on Teaching
Management Science in San Francisco, CA on July 13-16, 2006.
- Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh participated in the Fulbright-Hays Group Project
Abroad Field Seminar in Malaysia and Singapore on June 20 through July 28,
2006.
- Dr. John Buttermore traveled to St. Paul Homes in Greenville, PA on
September 6, 2006 to discuss future site visit for SRU students.
- Dr. Diane Galbraith attended a McGraw Hill Focus Group in Chicogo, IL on
September 28-29, 2006.
- "Job Search 101" was held on October 3 & 5, 2006. On
October 3rd, Michelle Donovan spoke on "Networking at a Career
Event" in the Eisenberg Classroom Building Auditorium and on October 5th
as part of Job Search 101, nearly 40 area employers set up information booths
at the University Union offering SRU sophomores, juniors and seniors a chance
to talk with businesses offering internships and entry level employment.
- Dr. David Culp presented "An Analysis of
Economic Impact Studies for Higher Education" he co-authored with Dr.
John Misner at the International Atlantic Economic Society conference in
Philadelphia, PA on October 6-8, 2006.
- Dr. Donald Tompkins presented "Values of Turkish University
Students" at the Association of Pennsylvania University Business and
Economics Faculty (APUBEF) meeting in State College, PA on October 5-6, 2006.
- Dr. Diane Galbraith presented "Getting to the Heart of the Human
Resource Professional" at the Association of Pennsylvania University
Business and Economics Faculty in State College, PA on October 5, 2006.
- Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh co-authored paper "The Effects of Globalization
and Culture on International Corporate Cash Holdings" with Dr. Kiyoung
Chang. The revised version of this manuscript was accepted for
presentation at the Financial Management Association International Annual
Meeting October session in Salt Lake City. The co-authors also prepared
"Corporate Cash Holdings, Foreign Direct Investment, and Corporate
Governance" published in May's Global Finance Journal.
- Dr. Anna Lusher attended the West Virginia Council of Accounting
Educators meeting in Charleston, WV on October 5-7, 2006 where she will serve
at meeting coordinator, panel moderator, and president-elect.
- Dr. John Misner presented an economic impact study to the St. Paul Homes
board of directors in Greenville, PA on October 18, 2006.
- Dr. Anna Lusher attended an Assessment Seminar in Tampa, FL on October
25-27, 2006.

November 16, 2006.
- Dr. Jesus Valencia will present "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad

- Dr. Jesus Valencia will travel to Madrid, Spain to present a paper,
"Migration and its Determinants: A Study of Two Communities in
Colombia" at the International Atlantic Economic Conference (IAES) in Madrid, Spain on March 12-18, 2007.
- Guest speaker, Candace Kollas spoke on March 26, 2007 during the School of
Business Week on "The Multi-Generational Workforce." Ms.
Kollas practiced labor and employment law and is president of Workable
Options.
- Guest speaker, Lisa Guard spoke on March 29, 2007 during the School of
Business Week to educate students on the proper attire to wear to an interview
and to a job. She also covered business etiquette in the workplace.
- Guest speaker, Enzo
Santilli, managing director of MarketSphere Consulting's Pittsburgh office,
spoke on March 27, 2007 during the School of Business Week as part of the
"Success Starts Here" series.

- Slippery Rock University launched a major in criminology
and criminal justice this fall following approval from the Pennsylvania
State System of Higher Education's board of governors.

2006.
- Dr. Alana Atchinson participated in the Fulbright-Hays Group Project

2006.
- Dr. S.B. Mani presented "India's New Population Policy and the Role
of Traditional Birth Attendants in Rural India" at the XVI World Congress of Sociology in
Durban, South Africa on July 20-30, 2006.
- Dr. Katherine Hardesty attended the Inside-Outside Training Institute in
West Chester, PA on July 30 - August 6, 2006.
- Dr. Ahmad Khalili presented "Pluralism, Ethnic Diversity and Islam
in Malaysia: Some Reflections on An Islamic Society in Southeast
Asia" at the Executive Board Meeting of Pennsylvania Sociological Society
in Edinboro, PA on October 13-14, 2006.
- Dr. Ahmad Khalili presented "Beyond the Personal Choice: A
Macro-Micro Approach to Examine Delinquency Behavior" at the American
Society of Criminology conference in Los Angeles, CA on November 1-5, 2006.
- Dr. Youngyol Yim presented "Attitudes Toward Punishment Among CJ
Undergraduates" at the American Society of Criminology (ASC) conference
in Los Angeles, CA on November 1-3, 2006.
- Don Hammond was a guest lecture in Human Diversity classes offered by Dr.
Herman Jones. Mr. Hammond lectured on gay adoptions, he was the first
gay man in Allegheny County to adopt a child. The lecture was on
November 29, 2006.
- Dr. Alana Atchinson will present two papers "Feed My Sheep: Rural
Poverty and the Church" and "Respecting All Paths: Teaching
Christian Social Work Students About Other Faiths" and a poster
presentation, "Are We Meeting Our Goals: Social Work Program
Assessment" at the North American Association of Christians in Social
Work Convention in Dallas, TX on March 10-12, 2007.
- Dr. Alana Atchinson will be a panel member "Reports on Learning from
Diversity: Multiculturalism in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei" at
the Thirteenth Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) National Conference in
Seattle, WA on March 8-12, 2007.
- Dr. Ahmad Khalili will attend the 17th Annual ASEN Conference on ethnicity,
nationalism and religious extremism in London, England on April 16-22, 2007.
- Guest speaker Rudulph Alexander Jr. presented at various SASW classes to
enhance campus climate in regards to diversity and to increase professional
proficiency of criminology and social work students on April 19, 2007..
He will also spoke during common hour on "Racism, Social Justice and the

- Dr. David Champion has been elected second vice president of the
Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Justice Educators, the first step in
becoming president in 2009.
- Dr. David Champion and Dr. Katherine Hardesty presented a co-authored paper
"Jail Nurses: Perceptions, Stigmatization and Working Styles in
Correctional Health Care" at the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal
Justice Educators (PACJE) meeting. This paper was accepted for July
publication in the Journal of Correctional Health Care.
- Guest speaker Don Hammond will lecture on gay adoptions in Dr. Herman
Jones's Human Diversity Classes on April 20, 2007. Mr. Hammond was the
first gay man in Allegheny County to adopt a child.
- The 8th annual Social Work Community Training Conference
will be held on
April 20, 2007 at the Regional Learning Alliance. Stephen M. Marson,
Editor - Social Work Values and Ehthics (on-line journal) and Professor of
Social Work at University of North Carolina-Pembroke, will deliver
keynote address and conduct workshop on Social Work values and ethics.
- Dr. Thomas Bechard will present "Gatekeeping in a Northeastern
State" & "An Innovative Educational Assessment for Baccalaureate
Field Instruction: The Educational Contract" at the 50th
Anniversary Conference for the Wurzweiler School of Social Work in New

PA on February 20, 2007 for a Job Shadow Day.
- SRU students (Chris Chapman, Stephanie Kasenter, and Brian Turner) will
accompany Dr. Adel Fergany to a computer programming contest and attend the
Pennsylvania Association of Computer and
Information Science Educators (PACISE) Conference at Lock Haven, PA on March
23-24, 2007. Dr. Fergany will present a panel discussion "Privacy
in the Age of Information Technology" at the conference.
- SRU students will accompany Dr. Sam Thangiah to present at The Institute for
Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS)
International 2007 conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico on July 7-11,
2007. The following will be presented: "Heuristics for
Routing School Buses in Rural Districts" by Sam R. Thangiah and Alex
Kline, and "The Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Windows using
Geometric Clustering and Genetic Algorithms" by Sam R. Thangiah and Kevin
D. Sobczak.
Military Science
- The ROTC Battalion entered two
teams in the 22nd Annual Army Ten Miler held in
Washington
,
D.C.
on October 8, 2006. The following
cadets toured the Nation’s Capitol on Saturday and completed the race on
Sunday: Chris Mathis, Amanda Herman, Rachel Markovitch, Joe Lustick, Chris
Thrasher, Michael Botjer, Bradlee Spudic, Nate Thomson, Jonathan Turner,
Vernon Webb.
- The ROTC Battalion entered a
10-cadet team in the annual Brigade Ranger Challenge competition held at Fort
Indiantown Gap, PA from October 14-15, 2006.
The cadets competed against teams from all 20 universities within the
Brigade (PA, NJ, NY). The team
finished 5th overall and 2nd in their flight.
The team competed in an Army Physical Fitness Test, hand grenade
assault course, obstacle course, one-rope bridge water crossing, orienteering,
tactics written exam, weapons disassembly/assembly and 10km ruck-march events.
Team members and alternates were: Chris Mathis, Andrew Sharp, Micah
Linderman, Pat Passewitz, Jonathan Turner, Collier Wright, Bradlee Spudic,
Michael Botjer, Chris Spudic, Emma Christensen, Jessica Ericson, Tyler Sakland,
Chad Baker.
- Several cadets participated in the
campus' Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11, 2006 by providing support for
the flag-raising and closing of the ceremony. LTC Bialozor was the
speaker.

- Military Science commissioned two 2nd Lieutenants at the end of fall 2006
semester. Congratulations to: 2LT Clay Johnson, who will serve in

who will serve as an active duty officer in the Ordnance Branch.

on January 21, 2007.
- The ROTC Battalion will
participate in a Garrison Training Exercise in Ravenna, Ohio on February 23-25, 2007. 40 cadets
are scheduled to attend. The training will consist of garrison operations,
Army Physical Fitness Test, Land Navigation, marksmanship training and drill
and ceremony tasks.
- MAJ James Leise will accompany
cadets attending the joint field training exercises being held in Camp Dawson,
WV on March 29, 2007 - April 1, 2007.
