MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Welcome to the College of Education
at Slippery Rock University. Your
interest in becoming a teacher indicates that you are interested in
working with children and helping them learn – the most
noble of all professions. Since its founding in 1889, Slippery Rock
University has been known as a teacher's college.
Today,
one in three students at the ROCK is a teacher education major.
Throughout the years, our College of Education has had a marked influence
on the education of K-12 students – not only in our western
Pennsylvania service area, but also throughout the nation. Graduates of our teacher preparation
programs are among the most sought after teacher candidates in the
country with school districts from Hawaii, California, Arizona, Nevada,
and many southern states regularly attending our Teacher Education Job
Fairs.
Our
faculty believes that future teachers “learn by doing” and to that
end, they have developed outstanding experiences for our students. These
experiences include field experiences in urban areas (Pittsburgh and
Philadelphia), rural areas, and
student teaching opportunities in Pittsburgh, Clark County, Nevada,
Mexico City, and Dublin, Ireland, as well as our local service area. As
you proceed in making your decision about which teacher preparation
program to enter, we sincerely hope that you will carefully examine all
that the ROCK has to offer. Regardless of the program in which you are
interested, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions
