Secondary Education:  Citizenship-History


The Citizenship-History certificate allows applicants to teach history, geography, economics, and political science in grades 7-12.  The curriculum requires the same academic content-area courses and electives as an undergraduate major in history.  Significant supporting coursework in the other social science content areas is also included in this certification program.

Specialization--Social Studies-History


Required courses:


Two of the following world history courses: 


HIST  151  

Ancient and Medieval World

HIST  152     

Rise of the Modern World

HIST  153     

Twentieth-Century World

Two of the following U.S. history courses:  

HIST 201 Colonial America to 1825

HIST  202     

United States History, 1825-1900
HIST 203 United States Since 1900

Twenty-one credits from the following groups:


American History 6-9

Non-Western History 


European History      


HIST 205  Historical Methods--required 3

Twenty-one credits from the following groups:  

(Counted toward the required credits in liberal studies)


Economics 3
Geography  6
Political Science  6
Psychology 3
Sociology 3


Students desiring a secondary Social Studies-History certificate will complete these credits toward specialization in addition to the required credits in Liberal Studies (27+21) and Professional Education (37).
