Sport Management Alliance
The Sport Management Alliance is a student-directed organization dedicated to enhance the professional development of future sport managers. While education is a vital ingredient to achieving success, SMA provides Sport Management majors with outside university experiences. Students are able to meet academicians and practitioners in the Sport Management field through attending conferences such as the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), and the Stadium Managers Association (SMA). A third conference, the Sport Entertainment and Venues Tomorrow (SEVT) held each November, gives students the opportunity to not only meet and speak with professors and practitioners, but also meet other Sport management students from across the United States. The $20 annual SMA dues assist in deferring student travel expenses and to attract nationally known speakers. In addition, two $500 scholarships have recently been established to reward deserving Sport Management majors.
Hands-on experience and networking are two instrumental factors to enhance one's marketability in the ever- changing sport business industry. SMA organizes activities and trips that attempt to optimize the interaction between the Sport Management student and professionals in the field. SMA also organizes social trips to Toronto, Erie, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cleveland where students visit sport facilities and learn more about each other.
An executive board of nine individuals is elected each year and provides the officers with experience in leadership and decision making. The responsibilities of the board include: scheduling speakers, organizing trips and social excursions, promoting meetings and speakers and events, fundraising activities, and planning and organizing the monthly SMA meetings.
Monthly meetings are held to keep Sport Management majors aware of activities. Attendance at these meetings demonstrates the student's desire to improve themselves professionally. The meetings also provide the major with an opportunity to network with their peers and professors.
The Sport Management Alliance serves as a vehicle to meet other Sport Management majors, professors and practitioners and enables the student to become involved in the sport business industry. These activities ultimately provide students with the tools to mold themselves academically and professionally.
