Louis M. Slautterback is currently in his fifth decade of providing caring, loving, and heart felt instruction to the youth of Pennsylvania. Thirty-six and a half years in his role as an elementary physical education teacher in Franklin, Pennsylvania. During his tenure in the Franklin School District he served as a Cooperating Teacher to 156 Student Teachers. Since leaving Franklin he has been serving as an instructor and supervisor of student teachers at Slippery Rock University. Lou began teaching in five of Franklin’s Elementary buildings in January, 1968. He is passionate about his obligation to children and young adults. His love and undying sense of responsibility for them and their growth and development is immediately evident to anyone who comes into his presence.
Lou is a consummate professional and an outstanding teacher. Among other elected positions, he has served as Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance President, and the Eastern District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance President. However, the limelight is not the only place where he shines. His work behind the scenes in promoting health, fitness and the value of activity for children is unending. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his many years of devoted, unfailing hard work in behalf of the students with whom he works. In Pennsylvania he has received the Outstanding Young Teacher Award, the Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award, the Professional Honor Award and the E. B. Cottell Award. In the Eastern District AAHPERD, he has been awarded the Physical Education Merit Award, the Professional Honor Award and the President’s Award. Perhaps the capstone recognition for Lou was in March, 2001, in Cincinnati at the AAHPERDS National Convention, when he was presented with the National Honor Award for outstanding service in the profession. While these awards are testimonials to Lou’s hard work and professional commitment, those who know him best know him for his huge heart.
His speaking talents are in great demand. He has been a keynote speaker at numerous State and District AAHPERD conventions. In addition, he has made numerous presentations to Wellness Conferences, School District Professional Development Seminars, and to several leadership development conferences. Lou has served as a motivational speaker for social service organizations, commencement and the Chamber of Commerce in several locations.
Lou and his wife Susan have been married for 39 years, and they have one daughter, Bethany. Susan and Bethany are also in the education profession. Lou likes to read, walk, swim in the ocean, ride his motorcycle, and sing in his church choir.
