Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit by training and competing in sports.

Slippery Rock University's Adapted Physical Activity Program is proud to be the home of the Special Olympics University Curriculum. This program provides academic and hands on training to prepare college students to play an integral part of the Special Olympics program by acting as coaches, volunteers and administrators of Special Olympic events. Students participating in the curriculum become certified through the Special Olympics to act as coaches and event managers. In addition, students have the chance to take on leadership roles and help to run the Western Pennsylvania Fall Sectional held on the SRU Campus.
Butler County teams currently headquartered at Slippery Rock include:
- Equestrian
- Gymnastics
- Swimming
Students have also partnered with the Butler County Special Olympics to assist in running programs in other sports. For more information about Slippery Rock's Special Olympics Programs, please contact Wendy Fagan at wendy.fagan@sru.edu or 724-738-2791
