Course Shell Creation
Blackboard course are generally created 45 days prior to the start of a new term. This means that an empty course shell is created for each scheduled academic course, with instructor assigned and students enrolled. This empty course shell is initially be set as “unavailable” to student view. An instructor need only log into Blackboard, choose the course they wish to work on from the list located on the right of the main page, add content as desired, and then make the course “available” to student view when ready. Content from previous courses can be easily copied into new course shells (See details below). An email from the Blackboard Administrator will be sent notifying faculty when this process is complete.

Reminder: Email addresses listed in Blackboard cannot be changed by the instructor or user. All email correspondence conducted via Blackboard will be sent to each user's Rockmail account.

Please note that faculty should NOT “reuse” previous semester course shells. New shells will be available for each course and content from previous courses can be easily copied if needed.

Previous courses will NOT be removed from the system. Faculty should make their previous course shells "unavailable" as soon as possible so that they will not show on the students' list of courses. (see below for guidance).

Automatic Enrollment of Students into a New Course Shell

All enrolled students will be listed when the new courses are created. The enrollment lists will be updated daily for two weeks. At this time, students who drop a class ARE NOT automatically removed from your course shell. These students should be manually removed by the instructor after the drop/add period. You are encouraged to monitor the listing with your official class roll to ensure accuracy.

Copying Previous Courses into New Course Shells
All content from a previous course can be copied into a new empty course shell by using the instructor control panel while logged into the course you wish copied. Locate and click the “ Course Copy ” link in the lower left of your control panel. Then click “ Copy Course Materials into an Existing
Course .” Follow the steps presented to you to identify the course wish to have the content copied.

Copying Specific Items From a Previous Course into a New Course Shell
If you desire to copy only specific items (uploaded document, or one specific folder of information) from a previous course , use the control panel to locate the item or folder you wish to copy. Click the “ Copy ” button located to the right, next to the “ Modify ” and “ Remove ” buttons. Follow the steps presented to identify the course and specific location to which you want the content copied.

Clearing Your List of Courses

Since the previous courses will NOT be removed from the system, the combination of Spring and Fall courses will appear on your “My Courses” list of the "My Institution" tab . You can remove courses from the list without actually removing them from the system. To remove a course from the list, click the “pencil point” icon in the upper right of the “ My Course ” section (course list area of the My Institution tab). You can choose which course to show. Remember, this only removes the course from your view. Note that within this edit area you may choose to show course number along with the name. This may be beneficial to you if you have two or three courses with the same name.
