Internships are a vital part of a college students
experience. They provide a window into the world
of working professionals and provide the student
with contacts that they can use to begin future
job searches.
Most major media companies look for internships
when reviewing the resume of a recently graduated
college student and often consider them a deciding
factor when making hiring decisions.
Students should start investigating possible internship
opportunities 6-8 months before they plan to start
their internship. The most attractive internships
are competitive and require application months in
advance. The student should also spend this time
preparing a professional looking cover letter and
resume.
Virtually every student who participated in an internship
gains something from the experience. Often a student
discovers that they have chosen the correct profession
and use their internship experience as a springboard
into the professional world.
Occasionally, a student will learn from an internship
that this area of the media is not appropriate for
them. While this may be looked upon as negative
it is better to learn this during an internship
than after you have committed to a career.
