Melissa Teodoro came to the United States from her home country Colombia to
pursue her graduate studies in Dance Ethnology at UCLA, which was sponsored by
a combination of a Fulbright Scholarship and a Colombian Governmental Fellowship
granted by Colfuturo. This degree provided her with the valuable research tools necessary
to approach dance from the theoretical lenses of history, anthropology, feminist theory,
multi-culturalism, folklore, among others. This theoretical background, combined with her
undergraduate degree in Social Communications from the Universidad Javeriana
in Bogota, has
equipped her to develop research projects,
|
focusing on dances of Latin America. Melissa also
finished an MFA degree in Dance from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa where she was able
to refine her skills in dance composition and performance and was exposed to various dance
forms from the Pacific Islands.
In 2003 Melissa was granted the UHM Graduate Divisions Award for Teaching Excellency which
reflects her immense interest in the area of dance pedagogy. She was also recently presented
with the Yasuki Sasa Award for Excellence in Choreography. Melissa is presently an Assistant
Professor at Slippery Rock University’s Department of Dance.
