Patricia Pierce, Ph.D., FACSM, C.S.C.S.

Department Chairperson

Dr. Pierce started her career at Slippery Rock University in 1994.  She has developed and taught several courses in the Exercise Science curriculum and currently serves as the ERS department chairperson.  Her educational background includes a BSEd in Physical Education from SRU and a MS and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh.  She has been involved in the health and fitness field for over 20 years and holds several certifications including ACSM-HFI and NSCA-CSCS.  Dr. Pierce is professionally active presenting, publishing and serving on national and regional committees.

Jonathan Anning, Ph.D., C.S.C.S.

 

Dr. Anning earned a Ph.D. in Exercise Science at The University of Toledo in 2001.  He was then hired at Slippery Rock University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences.  His main focus has been to develop the strength and conditioning program, which is endorsed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).  As a certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction (CSCS*D) and a resistance training specialist (RTS), Dr. Anning continuously strives to keep the strength and conditioning curriculum current.  In addition, as an advisor for the Strength and Conditioning Association (SACA), he seeks many opportunities for students to gain professional experiences outside the classroom.  Research interests include lifting techniques, sports training, and pediatric exercise science.

Lacy Frelin, MS

Lacy Frelin graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2007 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. She also received a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from East Stroudsburg University in 2008.  She moved back to Slippery Rock University where she is currently a temporary instructor in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences.  Ms. Frelin teaches Exercise Physiology.

      Anne E. Hays, Ph.D.

 

Anne Hays graduated from Ohio University in 1997 with a B.S. in Health Education.  Following a career in worksite wellness, Dr. Hays returned to school and earned her M.S. (2005) and Ph.D. (2007) from the University of Pittsburgh .  Currently, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences, Dr. Hays teaches applied anatomy, wellness promotion and programming, exercise leadership, and exercise physiology.  She is involved in multiple student/faculty projects and research in exercise and mental health.

Susan L. Herman, M.Ed.

Mrs. Herman draws from 28 years of teaching experience in higher education.  Her current course load of Introduction of Exercise Science, Exercise Leadership-Group Fitness, Wellness Promotion and Programming and Internship Supervision provides teaching opportunities with freshmen through seniors.  Her teaching philosophy focuses on student learning through establishing a “sense of team,” and encouraging active engagement in the Exercise Science culture.  The focus in this team approach is to foster self-confidence in students and student learning when surrounded by supportive faculty and peers that are moving toward a shared vision.  In the community, Mrs. Herman is currently on the Board of School Directors in Grove City where she serves on the School Health Policy committee.  In addition, she has served on the Executive Boards of both the Grove City and Franklin YMCA’s.

Jeffrey S. Lynn, Ph.D.

Dr. Lynn earned a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology at Kent State University in 2001. He then spent 2 years as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. In 2003, he moved to Slippery Rock University where he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences. Dr. Lynn’s current line of research involves the exercise physiology of ultra-marathon runners. Recent investigations have examined the endocrine control of hydration and sodium balance in men and women running 135 miles in temperatures up to 1300F at the Badwater Ultramarathon. He also maintains an active research agenda on several student/faculty projects.

 James L. Nuzzo, MS, C.S.C.S

Mr. Nuzzo has attained a B.S. degree in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University and a M.S. degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University.  His primary interests are in the field of strength and conditioning and the coaching of athletes and non-athletes in the weightroom.  Mr. Nuzzo is an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and he is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA.  He has presented research at NSCA National Conferences and has authored publications in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.  His primary research interests are in applied biomechanics, strength training, and sports performance.  Mr. Nuzzo currently teaches Applied Anatomy, Measurements and Statistical Applications in Exercise Science, and Strength Fitness.

William Ryan, Ph.D., M.P.H. R.N.

Dr. Ryan earned a BA in Anthropology from the University of Illinois, BSN and MSN degrees from St. Louis University, a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh.  He joined the faculty of SRU in the fall of  1995 and is currently an associate professor in the Exercise and Rehabilitative Science Department.  Dr. Ryan is a registered nurse and holds ACSM certifications as an Exercise Specialist, Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, and Exercise Program Director.  

Dr. Ryan currently teaches ERS 375 (Exercise Physiology), ERS 475 (Clinical Exercise Physiology), ERS 484 (Exercise Prescription) and FYRST seminar.  His research interests have included the development of instruments to assess body image disturbances in men and women.  Currently he is researching college student health behaviors, beliefs and attitudes with faculty from the ERS and Psychology departments at SRU.

Kimberly Smith, Ph.D., C.S.C.S.

Kimberly Smith earned a B.S. in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh.  She joined the faculty in 2006 and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences teaching Measurement and Statistical Applications in Exercise Science, Exercise Leadership: Group Fitness, Wellness Promotion & Programming, and Internship supervision.  Dr. Smith holds several certifications including ACSM-HFI, NSCA-CSCS, and AFAA-Primary Group Fitness Instructor.  Her current research interests include obesity, weight management and physical activity and she enjoys maintaining an active role in several ongoing student/faculty research projects.

Deborah Glenn has been employed at Slippery Rock University since 1984.  She has been the Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences department secretary since 2003.
