For Windows Users (On-Campus and Off-Campus)
(For Macintosh User Instructions, see other help files)

"RockMail" is an email system SRU uses to communicate with students, faculty, and everyone on campus. You can set up the common Windows email program, which is Outlook Express, to receive your RockMail. You will need to meet the following requirements:

  1. Your home PC is connected to the Internet via an Internet Service Provider
  2. The name of the SMTP (outgoing mail) server from the local provider (ex: mail.myisp.net). Call your provider or check their Web site to find this information.
  3. Your SRU user name and password (example: abc1234 if you're a student or firstname.lastname if you're staff or faculty). If you don't know your user ID, you can go to the campus directory and search for your name.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to setup Outlook Express:

  1. Open Outlook Express. If you are off-line, click "work offline."
Across the top of the window, you will see a toolbar that says: "File-Edit-View-Tools..."
  2. Click "Tools." A pull-down menu will appear. Find "Accounts" and click on it.
  3. In the window that appears, click on the "Mail" tab, then click on the "Add" tab at the top right of the window. Click on "Mail."
  4. In the window that opens, type in your SRU UserName (abc1234) then click "Next."
  5. Place a dot in the "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use," then type in your SRU E-Mail address (abc1234@sru.edu). Click Next.
  6. Make sure that "my incoming mail server is a POP3 server" is selected through the pull-down menu.
  7. Under incoming mail server, type rockmail.sru.edu.
  8. Under outgoing mail server, type in the name of your Internet provider's SMTP server
    (mail.myisp.net). Click Next.
  9. In the next window you will type in your account name (abc1234) then your password in the next space.
    Click Next.
  10. The next window may include a choice of how you connect to the Internet.
(If you already have a e-mail account setup, this may not apply to you).
    • I connect through a phone line and a modem - Choose this one if you are using a dial-up connection
    • I connect through a LAN local area network - Choose this one if you connect through a cable company or satellite.
    • Click "Next" and then Click "Finish"

You are now set up to receive your RockMail through Outlook Express. Now, when you check your Outlook Express email, it will also pull your email from RockMail.
