NEW WEB TOPICS
THE HIDDEN WEB:
The "hidden" or invisible web has been the focus of discussion
lately. This term refers to sources such as databases, archives, sites
that require registration (like the New York Times), and intranet
resources. To reveal the hidden web, use a search engine like Complete
Planet.
Google has a "Groups" engine that lets you search usenet discussion
boards--sometimes very informative. With the rapid explosion of blogs, or
weblogs, some blog-specific search engines have emerged, such as
Technorati and
Blogdigger.
THE SCHOLARLY WEB:
Special search engines retrieve educational or scholarly material. For
instance, Search.edu indexes 15 million
university and educational sites. Infomine
and Academic Info are
other search engines specializing in "academically valuable"
resources. Google Scholar provides
a good way to search for journal articles, with some drawbacks: Little
full-text is offered (you have to pay) and there is not as much specialized
subject "depth" as you would find in a library subscription database like
PsycINFO or Education Abstracts.
UPDATE: You can now set Google Scholar preferences to show Slippery Rock University Full-Text. In the preferences section, choose Find Library and enter Slippery Rock. Save your preferences and you will see "Full-Text @ SRU" in your result set. Clicking through will eventually take you to one of our databases and the complete article.
