The most critical step in Internet research is critical evaluation. Web sites and search engines become more plentiful every day, but the CONTENT does not necessarily improve exponentially. Internet content is unfiltered, unedited, and is not selected with the same care devoted to book selection in a library or to journal articles in a peer-reviewed or academic journal. Or, as Professor John Allen Paulos stated, "The Internet is the world's largest library. It's just that all the books are on the floor."
We will not be examining web pages for excellence in design or ease of navigation, although these are important features. We will be looking at web pages from an INFORMATION point of view. Four essential elements to examine and evaluate are :
A Note: It is difficult to keep web tutorial examples current, as for some strange reason, people tend to remove web pages which are being used as bad examples. Please report broken links to the author. Fortunately, there is no shortage of bad examples and I will replace them as quickly as possible.
