This tutorial provides basic library skills instruction, guiding you through the process of finding books, media, government documents, or journals in the Library's online catalog, known as PILOT.   Here are some important things to remember as you complete the tutorial.

You will be working through four basic steps:

  • Choosing a Topic
  • Planning a Search Strategy
  • Finding Books, Media and Documents
  • Searching for a Journal Title

You will be writing information on a worksheet as you plan your search strategy and use the catalog to find information on your topic.  When you have completed the steps and have finished filling in your worksheet, give it to your professor or the librarian at the Information Desk.

This icon form.gif (191 bytes) indicates points in the tutorial when you will need to write answers on your worksheet.

This icon book08.gif (324 bytes) indicates additional information on a topic (a chance to expand your horizons).   Use the back button on your browser to return to the tutorial after viewing these pages.

You may exit from the tutorial at any time and return later.  Click on the Table of Contents button to select the section on which you wish to work.
