Audition Dates

2008-2009

Music department auditions are held four times throughout the school year. The dates for the 2008-2009 academic year are:

• November 22, 2008

• January 24, 2009

• February 21, 2009

• March 21, 2009

If you would like to be considered for an academic scholarship through the university, you should plan to audition on one of the first audition dates. Music scholarships are determined later in the spring. Music applicants should apply to the University at the same time they apply for admission to the music department (a student must be admitted to both the University and the Music program).

If you would like to sign up for a music department audition, we encourage you to do so online. Just fill out the MS Word form below and submit it as an attachment via email to: brian.meixner@sru.edu.

Audition Procedures

Anyone desiring to be a music major or minor at Slippry Rock University must be accepted by the music department audition committee. Audition dates are scheduled in both fall and spring semesters, and may be arranged on one of these dates by calling the music department directly or by downloading and submitting the audition form to Dr. Brian Meixner, the audition committee chair (see sidebar at left).

Special auditions may also be arranged by calling Dr. Brian Meixner at (724) 738-2984.

The Audition Process

There are three components to the audition:

1. Performance Audition: Determines the student's level of accomplishment on his or her major instrument. Performances of two contrasting compositions are required. Secondary areas of performance (i.e., piano, voice) should also be demonstrated. Students will be asked to take brief diagnostic exams in sight singing, pitch matching, and rhythmic reading, as well as piano proficiency for purposes of placement.

2. Personal Interview: Determines if the student has the necessary interest, talent, and dedication to successfully develop a career in music.

3. Theory Diagnostic Exam: A diagnostic tool used to determine placement in the four-semester Music Theory sequence. If you have taken AP Music Theory at your high school, you make take this exam to place out of Music Theory 1 at SRU. Concepts covered include fudamentals of pitch and rhythm, major and minor scales and key signatures, intervals, chords, counterpoint, and rudimentary analysis skills.
