Music degree programs at SRU are designed to appeal to the interests and career goals of contemporary students. All programs are in accordance with the specifications of and have received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The music faculty is comprised of the finest performing artists and master teachers in the area. Many factors, including a low student-to-faculty ratio, modern technologies, numerous ensemble opportunities, and excellent facilities for study and practice, blend to create a challenging and rewarding learning environment.

Our goal is your success.

Career Opportunities

Location and Students

Slippery Rock University’s gorgeous 600-acre campus is located in Slippery Rock, PA, a small town of about 3000 permanent residents in the rolling countryside of Western Pennsylvania. The university is also in the middle of a population center of about 120,000 people, with access to two major interstate highways, I-79 and I-80, and under one hour away from the vibrant cultural offerings of Pittsburgh.

Approximately 70 percent of SRU’s 8,000 students are from western Pennsylvania, with Pittsburgh and other cities in Allegheny County providing the largest number of students. Another 22 percent of the student body comes from central and eastern Pennsylvania. The remainder come from more than 35 states in the United States and over 60 other countries. The Music Department recruits heavily from local and regional high schools and is competitive with many similar-sized and larger universities.

Music majors from Slippery Rock have gone on to employment in a variety of fulfilling careers. An average of 95% of our music education majors are successful at obtaining positions as teachers in both public and private schools. Many also continue their education by attending graduate school. Music therapy majors look forward to careers in special education, nursing homes, psychiatric treatment centers, correctional facilities, and rehabilitation centers. Performance majors find opportunities as performers, private studio teachers, or go on to graduate programs to pursue careers in higher education. Still other students find rewarding careers in music merchandising, church music, private teaching, and the television and radio industry.
