RESEARCH AND THESIS POLICY AND PROCEDURE
ADAPTED FROM: Department of Parks and Recreation/ Environmental Education Policy and Procedures, January 1992, revised June 1993.

A. Students who elect the thesis option will consult with an appropriate faculty member and their academic advisor concerning the thesis/research topic and potential thesis committee members. The thesis advisor may or may not be the student's academic advisor.

B. Upon selection of the thesis advisor and committee members (at least 2), the academic advisor will notify the Graduate Coordinator who, in turn, will recommend them to the Director of Graduate Studies. (The thesis advisor and committee members must be regular or adjunct SRU faculty who have been granted graduate faculty status).
*Upon the Director of Graduate Studies approval, all the involved parties will be notified.

C. The thesis advisor, in consultation with the committee members, is responsible for coordinating the thesis process and shall approve the topic and methodology, thesis prospectus and thesis as well as chair the
Prospectus Review and Thesis Defense. The committee members shall approve the thesis prospectus and thesis and participate in the prospectus review and thesis defense. If not a member of the thesis committee, the student's academic advisor shall sit as an ad hoc member of the committee.

D. The thesis advisor shall notify the academic advisor and Graduate Coordinator of the date/time of the prospectus review and thesis defense. The Graduate Coordinator shall, in turn, notify the department chair and Director of Graduate Studies. The academic advisor, Graduate Coordinator, department chair and Director of Graduate Studies will be invited to attend and participate as non-voting members of the panel.

E. Part-time, and adjunct faculty, as well as full-time, regular faculty may be recommended as a thesis advisor.

F. Student research under thesis or independent study, during internships or under other academic situations shall be approved, monitored and evaluated by the faculty member assigned to supervise or administer the course. Acknowledgements required of the department chair and Graduate Coordinator are for information and record keeping purposes. The Director of Graduate Studies must authorize a student's registration in 700 Independent Study per university policy.

G. Students will not be permitted to register for 699, 700 or 800 without the prior approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.
