PREE 560 Terrestrial Systems Education
Using terrestrial ecosystems as a thematic focus, this course provides hands-on and problem-solving activities for integrating environmental education into a variety of disciplines. The course will include certification in Project Learning Tree, an internationally renowned supplemental environmental education program, which highlights trees and forests. (1 credit)
PREE 561 Wildlife Education
Using wildlife as a thematic focus, this course provides hands-on and problem solving activities that easily integrate environmental education into a variety of disciplines. The course will include certification in Project WILD, a nationally acclaimed and award winning supplemental environmental education curriculum. (1 credit)
PREE 562 Aquatic Systems Education
Using aquatic environments as a thematic focus, this course provides hands-on and problem-solving activities that easily integrate environmental education into a variety of disciplines. The course will include certification in Keystorne Aquatic Resource Education (KARE), a nationally acclaimed and award winning supplemental environmental education curriculum. (1 credit)
PREE 563 Environmental Education Grant Writing
Environmental educators have the opportunity to obtain financial support through grant writing. This course is designed to provide basic information on how to be an effective grantswriter. There will be opportunity to practice effective grant writing skills, review funded and non-funded proposals and explore the many sources for grants from both the public and provate sectors. (1 credit)
PREE 564 Integrating Environmental Education into the Curriculum
This course is designed to provide a basic framework in environmental education for educators and develop skills for integrating environmental curriculum into any discipline. The course covers the definition, history, and philosophy of EE, interdisciplinary curriculum design and implementation, and integration techniques. Texts from various disciplines will be examined and strategies implemented for integration. A diverse list of EE supplemental curricula will also be examined. (1 credit)
PREE 603 Field Botany for Environmental Educators
This course focuses on the development of field identification skills and the natural history of seasonally available flowering plants. Course information and activities are designed for a hands-on approach to educational programming and curriculum development in natural history, as it applies to environmental education. (1 credit)
PREE 604 Endangered Systems for Environmental Educators
This course takes a holistic and conceptual view of endangered systems and their associated species. The mechanics of biodiversity, natural and social issues surrounding endangerment, and supportive educational curriculum will be included. Special emphasis will be placed on the biodiversity supplemental curriculum "Windows on the Wild". (1 credit)
PREE 605 Entomology for Environmental Educators
Insects are the most abundant and diverse animals on earth. Studies within this course focus on insects, spiders and other close relatives. Course information and activities are designed for a hands-on approach to educational programming and curriculum development in natural history. (1 credit)
PREE 607 Herpetology for Environmental Educators
An overview of reptiles and amphibialns, with special emphasis on Pennsylvania species, and their use in environmental education activities. No prerequisites. (1 credit)
PREE 608 Ichthylolgy for Environmental Educators
This course focuses on the ecology and identification of fish. Course information and activities are designed for practical and hands-on approach to educational programming and curriculum development in natural history as it applies to environmental education. (1 credit)
PREE 609 Mammology for Environmental Educators
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of mammology with emphasis on current issues in mammalian conservation, management, and identification. (1 credit)
PREE 610 Ornithology for Environmental Educators
This field oriented course focuses on practical information on birds and birding. Course information and activities are designed for a hands-on approach to educational programming and curriculum development in natural history, as it applies to environmental education. (1 credit)
PREE 612 Open Space Planning
The fundamentals of open space planning, including feasibility studies, site analysis, resource analysis, and planning consideration. (3 credits)
PREE 613 Analysis of Professional Literature
A "how to" course in understanding and using statistical analysis for reading and research and techniques for analyzing research publications and writing literature reviews. (3 credits)
PREE 615 Issues in Parks and Recreation/Resource Management
An integrative course for detailed study of current and future challenges facing the parks and recreation professional. (3 credits)
PREE 620 Recreation and the Aging Process
A study of the interests, needs, and limitations of individuals age 55 and above, as they concern their use of discretionary time and use of leisure activities.(3 credits)
PREE 636 Tournament Structure and Administration
A study of the organization, administration, and supervision of intramural programs. (3 credits)
PREE 640 Foundations of Sustainability
This course explores the broad concept of "sustainability", attempting to place the MS3 Program withing the context of the larger sustainability movement. The many facets of sustainability are recognized, and certain aspects are selected for more in-depth analysis. (2 credits)
PREE 641 Principles and Techniques of Permaculture Design
This course is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. Special emphasis placed on the harmonious integration of landscape and people in a sustainable way. (3 credits)

The application of low-input sustainable agriculture practices. (3 credits)
PREE 643 Sustainable Agricultural Practices in Plant and Animal Husbandry The application of sustainable principles to organic plant production and animal rearing. (3 credits)
PREE 644 Fertility Considerations in Regenerative Agriculture
The application of chemical principles to the field of agriculture. Emphasis is placed upon the goal of better utilization of the environment through application of laboraory analysis and classroom discussions of the crude materials and products of the agricultural industry. Two hours of lecture and 3 hours of lab or field work per week. Prerequisite Chem 122, 201, 200, or consent of instructor. (3 credits)
PREE 645 Soils as a Resource
This course is designed to provide students with an analysis of the soil resource as a pivotal component of agricultural and natural ecosystems. This synthesis of historic and scientific information will enable students to critically evaluate the sustainability of soil management systems. (3 credits)
PREE 646 The Quest for Permaculture
Through this course, students discover their abilities to blend a secular worldview of permaculture landscape eith a sense of place sacredness. Course content and activities bring students into contact with the range of historical and contemporary processes needed to design within the local bioregion. Field trips required. PREE 647 Cultural Models in Permaculture
Cross-cultural comparisons of permaculture design, including models of indigenous permacultural techniques and models employed in the industrial world. Prerequisites: PREE 641 (3 credits) not currently offered
PREE 652 Green Schools
Green schools are a combination of a physically healthy and academically challenging environment. This course provides knowledge and skills that will allow an educator to evaluate the physical health of a school environment and integrate supportive environmental curricula. (1 credit)
PREE 661 Design and Resource Development for Energy Conservation
This course provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of environmentally conscious design. With an emphasis on understanding the natural and cultural context, the course will address the environmental issues related to the development of a small-scale design project. (3 credits)
PREE 662 Allergy Free Nontoxic Design
This course provides and introduction to the theories and practices related to the design of healthy buildings. The course examines the impacts of the built environment on both human health and environmental health, and the role of the designer in addressing these issues. (3 credits)
PREE 663 Alternative Energy and Engineering for Sustainable Systems
The course will explore environmental technology and energy efficiency as they relate to buildings. Topics will include passive and active techniques for thermal comfort, day lighting, and alternative energy resources. (3 credits)
PREE 671 Sustainable Forest Management
This course covers the main issues involved in managing forests to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future. Course emphasis is on analysis of current forest management issues and trends that attempt to address this long-term goal. This analysis includes ecological variables, but also incorporates economic, social, and political aspects. (3 credits)
PREE 672 Sustainable Wildlife Management
The application of permaculture principles and design to wildlife habitat and wildlife systems management to include habitat analysis and enhancement, environmental needs of key and indicator species, and management techniques to maintain wildlife diversity within the major global habitat regions. Prerequisites: PREE 641 or consent of instructor. (3 credits) not currently offered
PREE 673 Ecosystem Management
This course examines the principles and practice of ecosystem management with an emphasis on terrestrial ecosystems. An examination of the ecological concepts and processes that underlie ecosystem integrity is followed by an analysis of the role of humans in shaping and managing ecosystems, including institutional and socioeconomic considerations. A basic understanding of ecological principles is required. (3 credits)
PREE 675 Recreation Resources Management
The principles and practices of recreational land and water management. Prerequisite: consent of instructor (3 credits)
PREE 676 Site and Building Feasibility Studies
This course is designed to develop a comprehensive feasibility study for selected land-based sustainable enterprises. The course will include an on-site inventory and analysis, market evaluation, preliminary planning and cost-return analysis. Three project tracks recreation resource management, community development and sustainable agriculture. (3 credits)
PREE 678 Restoration Ecology
Restoration ecology is an emerging discipline that addresses ecological healing, and this course examines the principles and practices underlying this growing field. Exploration of conceptual issues is followed by a review of key ecological concepts pertinent to successful restoration of biodiversity and other ecological features. Practical issues for implementation of a restoration project are also thoroughly addressed. A prior understanding of ecological principles is required. (3 credits)
PREE 680 Environmental Education
A study of the history, philosophy, and theory of environmental education; problems and trends in environmental education; and relationships of environmental education to the total school program. (3 credits)
PREE 681 Environmental Issues
A course designed to develop skills in the identification, investigation, evaluation, and solution of environmental problems and issues. Students will learn how to use these skills, in formal and non-formal educational situations, in the development of an environmental literate citizenry. (3 credits)
PREE 682 Planning and Development for Environmental Education
A study of principles and techniques of planning areas and facilities for environmental education emphasizing school grounds, forests, camps, and environmental educaiton laboratories and centers. Field trips are required. (3 credits)
PREE 683 Administration of Environmental Education Programs
A study of education administration and curricular development for programs; duties and responsibilities of the coordinator or director; and operation and administration of the areas and facilities. (3 credits)
PREE 685 Leisure Systems
A study of the various factors involved in the use of leisure time and the leisure systems developed as a result of the interaction of these factors. (3 credits)
PREE 686 Management Strategy in Parks and Recreation
A study of administrative and managerial strategy focused on the needs of a parks and recreation professional. (3 credits)
PREE 688 Interpretive Media
A study of various media useful in an interpretive situation, interpretive planning and analysis, and interpretive programming for park and recreation professional. (3 credits)

PREE 699 PREE Internship
Individually designed experiential learning intended to provide the student with an opportunity for observation and participation in an array of parks, recreation, and/or environmental education activities in an approved setting. Prerequisite: Approval by department committee based on consideration of student's background, previous experience, and demonstrated readiness to undertake responsibilities involved in internships. (1-6 credits)

PREE 700 Independent Study
A special study opportunity for students to investigate, in depth, approved topics in recreation, environmental education, or sustainable systems. Topics and credit established by student and supervising instructor. (1-3 credits)

PREE 740 Sustainable Systems Seminar
Discussion of contemporary issues and concepts regarding sustainable systems drawn from literature reviews and presentations by experts in the field (course must be taken twice). (1 credit)
PREE 799 Research Methods
A practical course in using research to study recreation, park, and resource management problems. (3 credits)
