| In order to receive a certificate at the end of the eight-month,
two course sequence, each student must perform satisfactorily
in the following areas:
1. On the weekly quizzes and the final exams students must
obtain an average grade of "B" or better. (This
equates to an 80% or better average for each semester.) Students
who do not make the 80% requirement on academics will not
be issued a certificate from the program.
2. During the firearms training, each student must be able
to shoot a passing score on the Sigarms NPS firearms course
(day and night qualifications) and on the NPS shotgun qualification
course. If the student fails to meet this requirement, the
student will not be issued a certificate from the program.
3. During the response driving course, each student must
demonstrate a proficiency at
safely handling a patrol vehicle in the response/pursuit driving
course. If the student fails to meet this requirement, the
student will not be issued a certificate from the program.
4. During the role-play portions of the course, each student
must demonstrate an ability to function in the role of a law
enforcement officer, handle disturbances, write citations,
engage in the mechanics and techniques of arrest, and exhibit
appropriate interpersonal skills, human relations, courtesy
and tact. If the student fails to meet this requirement, the
student will not be issued a certificate from the program.
5. During the report writing portion of the course, each
student must be able to demonstrate an ability to write clear
and succinct reports that include all relevant facts. If the
student fails to meet this requirement, the student will not
be issued a certificate from the program.
6. Each student must also earn, as a minimum, an Advanced
First Aid and CPR card from the American Red Cross, National
Safety Council, or similar agency.
7. Each student must also be physically fit. Students must
be able to participate and complete all five components of
the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB has been adopted
by the National Park Service and is the standard for most
of the federal law enforcement agencies. The five PEB components
are: 1.5 mile run/walk, Agility Run, Flexibility Measure,
body fat composition, and Bench Press
8. Each student must actively participate in all training
sessions. Class attendance and training attendance is MANDATORY!
Students must make prior arrangements and gain a Director’s
approval in order miss a particular class. There are no make-up
assignments for missing a mandatory training session. Students
who miss classes and/or training sessions without the approval
of the Program Directors will not receive a Certificate of
Completion from the SRU Park Ranger Training Program. Mandatory
training sessions include but are not limited to: Firearms
Training, Driving Training, Self-Defense Tactics, Use of Force,
FATS Machine or equivalent, Police Baton Training, OC Spray
Training, and the PEB Course. If the student fails to meet
this requirement, the student will not be issued a certificate
from the program.
9. Students must exhibit the appropriate
levels of maturity, confidence, and responsibility mandated
by the field of park law enforcement. Students must adhere
to the SRU PRTP’s Code of Conduct and Dress Code. If
the student fails to meet these requirements, the student
will not be issued a certificate from the program.
