Course Descriptions - Therapeutic Recreation

PREE 120 Inclusive Leisure Services
This course offers information and activities designed to develop an awareness of people with disabilities, how attitudes can be enhanced and how students can influence their behaviors and the behaviors of others in regards to people with disabilities. Legislation related to various disability issues will be reviewed with a great emphasis on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Accessibility issues will be emphasized and students will complete an accessibility survey to increase their knowledge of the access standards required by law. The concept of "inclusion" will be the focus of the course assignments and activities.
PREE 220 Therapeutic Recreation Services
This course is an introductory course for TR majors. The various models utilized to describe TR will be introduced and the relationship to the wellness concept will be reviewed. The focus of the course assignments will allow students to demonstrate an understanding of the TR process and its application in various settings with different individuals.
PREE 229 Clinical Aspects of Therapeutic Recreation
This course provides more in-depth information on the process of TR including the professional standards of practice. In addition, the course will cover information on the different levels of care along the continuum of health care; on the health care accreditation process/standards; documentation methods utilized in clinical environments; funding methods; outcome measurement systems; managed care leadership and the process of continuous quality improvement (CQI).
PREE 232 Therapeutic Recreation for Persons with Physical Disabilities
This course covers more detailed information on various physical disabilities. The incidence, prevalence, etiology, treatment, and prognosis for each condition will be presented along with the potential application of TR with each condition and the considerations of programming with individuals experiencing the disability.
PREE 233 Therapeutic Recreation for Persons with Mental Health and Psychosocial Disabilities
This course covers more detailed information on various mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, etiology, treatment and prognosis for each condition will be presented along with the potential application of TR with each condition and the considerations for programming with individuals experiencing these conditions.
PREE 318 PKRC Administration
This course covers the basics of administration including management theory and practice. The distinction between management and leadership including the principles of management and leadership. The various aspects of strategic planning, mission/vision statements, performance standards (incorporating ADA requirements), human resource issues, financial planning and budgeting, communications and team work is incorporated into this course.
PREE 319 Client Assessment
This course focuses on developing the knowledge and skill to be competent with the assessment process. The various methods of assessment are explored, the process of communication is reviewed and activities designed to improve skills in this area. Standardized assessment tools used for gathering assessment information are shared.
PREE 320 Program Design in Therapeutic Recreation
This course is designed for students to demonstrate skills in both comprehensive and individualized program planning. The systems approach is reviewed and applied to designing programs. The entire TR process is practiced in this course and students are challenged to learn a variety of activities/intervention. Facilitation techniques, behavioral management principles and evaluation methods are discussed.
PREE 351/352 Practicum
120 hours of field experience.
PREE 415 Issues in Therapeutic Recreation
This course offers assignments and activities designed for students to develop an awareness and understanding of the current issues impacting on the therapeutic recreation profession
PREE 420 Recreation for the Older Adult
The intent is to review the aging process and the importance of recreation to this population. The incidence, prevalence and demographics of aging will be presented along the implications for human service providers, particularly the recreation profession and therapeutic recreation.
PREE 423 Therapeutic Recreation Interventions
This course is designed so that assignments and activities will facilitate the students development of competencies in various interventions and therapeutic methods. Students will be exposed to information and skill development exercises in leisure education and counseling strategies, behavioral management principles, stress management, assertiveness/communication skills, community reentry or life skill training, pet therapy, horticulture therapy, aquatic therapy, relaxation training, time management, reality orientation, remotivation, validation, reminiscence therapy, music therapy, adventure/challenge therapy, etc.
PREE 450 Internship
The final field experience course consisting of a 12-15 week structured experience under the direct supervision of a full-time CTRS.
